I recently returned from a week-long trip down to the South Island, specifically Queenstown, Glenorchy, and Twizel. My goal was to try and capture some beautiful autumn colours, but being early April I wasn’t sure what the conditions would be like (the colours are usually best towards the end of April). While things didn’t go quite according to plan, I did end up capturing some photos that I’m happy with. Here’s a summary of my trip, along with some of the photos I managed to get. Days 1 -4: Queenstown On my first morning, I went to Lake Hayes for sunrise. As I was driving near the lake, I not ..read more

If you’re wanting to get your own photos printed, choosing a print lab can be a daunting task with so many options available online. While there are lots of chain stores offering cheap prints, often their quality leaves a lot to be desired. Either the colours don’t come out how they should, or they start to fade very quickly (quality prints should last decades as long as they’re not constantly in the sun). Below is a list of print labs that I have either personally used, or have been recommended by other photographers. It’s worth spending the extra money to get a quality print that does your p ..read more

If you’re not currently into landscape photography, maybe it’s worth considering it. Here are 5 reasons why you should take up landscape photography: 1. It gets you outdoors It’s pretty difficult to take amazing landscape photos from your lounge, so chances are you will have to venture outside in order to get some decent shots. If you’re the type of person that already enjoys the great outdoors then good for you, but a lot of people (such as myself before I got the landscape photography bug) need a bit of motivation. There is plenty of scientific evidence for the benefits of being outdoors, su ..read more

Does Gear Matter For Landscape Photography?

One of the common things you will hear from photographers is that when it comes to taking good photos, gear doesn’t matter. In other words, you don’t need the latest and greatest camera or lens in order to take a great photo. It’s the photographer, the person behind the camera, not the equipment that matters. In most regards, this is absolutely true and I couldn’t agree more. Some photographers, especially when starting out in landscape photography, are obsessed with the technical capabilities of their equipment in order to try and improve their photos when perhaps they should focus on other a ..read more

So you’ve decided you’re ready for some beautiful wall art, and you’ve decided what size it’s going to be. Another tough decision to be made is whether to go with a traditional framed paper print, or a frameless canvas print. The short answer is it depends where the canvas print or framed print will be hung, your personal preferences and tastes, the budget, and interior design style of your home or office. If you already have other pieces of wall art in the same area, it’s best to stick to the same style. But if you’re starting in a brand new space, here are some differences to consider when m ..read more

Queenstown is the adventure capital of New Zealand, and is also a stunning location for landscape photographers. There are countless locations in the area where you can take amazing photos, but here are my top 7. 1. One Mile Carpark You can’t get a much easier to access location than this. Just before you get to the Glenorchy-Queenstown road, there’s a nice spot along Lake Wakatipu that’s a 5 minute walk from the town centre. While it’s not too different than the rest of the lakeside, there are some pretty interesting rocks and pebbles here which make for great foreground interest. With the Re ..read more

So you’ve decided you need to add some life to your walls with a beautiful canvas or framed print, but now you’re having a hard time deciding what print size to get. Choosing an appropriate size is important, because if you get it wrong something will just feel off. Too small and your wall can look incomplete, too big and it can feel a bit overcrowded.
