It has not gone unnoticed that the Japanese stock market is the darling of the developed world of late, even out-performing the tech-heavy US NASDAQ over the last year. The NIKKEI 225 has just surpassed its previous record high, achieved a mere 30+ years ago, with the index now reaching the hallowed territory of 40,000 at the time of writing. Why Are Japanese Stocks Booming? This can largely be attributed to a changing macroeconomic environment, the ending of deflation, and a weak Yen. Even rising tensions between the US and China has seemingly prompted investors to reallocate portfolios int ..read more

Introduction Investing in the stock market can be a rollercoaster ride, and volatility is an inherent part of the experience. 2022 was a good example. As markets fluctuate, it's not uncommon for investors to feel a sense of panic. However, reacting emotionally to market turbulence can often do more harm than good. In this article, we'll explore why it's important not to panic when the markets are volatile and how maintaining a rational, long-term perspective can lead to more successful investing. At AP Advisers, we always maintain that time IN the markets (as opposed to TIMING them), is the ..read more

For our July blog, we would like to share an article written by LGT Wealth Management UK regarding the benefits of disciplined long-term investing...  "Far more money has been lost by investors preparing for corrections, or trying to anticipate corrections, than has been lost in corrections themselves." – Peter Lynch, Mutual Fund Manager During periods of heightened financial market volatility, and increased levels of uncertainty, it can be tempting to try and time the market by selling assets and then buying them back at a later stage. However, timing the market is virtually impos ..read more

Japan is to revise its tax exemption system for the NISA (Nippon Individual Savings Account), starting January 2024. NISA investments are exempt from tax normally levied on capital gains and dividends, and maybe useful additions to a diversified long-term portfolio. The NISA account is designed for individuals to self-select and manage a portfolio of funds or stocks, with a tax advantage to entice the piles of cash sitting in Japanese bank and post office accounts, as well as from under the futon!   Under the new NISA system, the Tsumitate NISA (for regular monthly contributions investe ..read more

Where Next For Markets?

As 2022 draws to a close, markets have rallied on hopes of slower inflation and a softening of interest rate policy by the US Central Reserve Bank. However, much more evidence of slowing inflation will be needed before we see any loosening of monetary policy. At some point in 2023, it is hoped we will see inflationary pressures easing, a peak in US interest rates, and fears of a deep economic recession subsiding. It is not a question of if, but when. Long-term investors who adopt the philosophy of ‘time IN the markets, not TIMING the markets’ should eventually be rewarded. It is much trickie ..read more

With the tragic events unfolding in Ukraine and with thought for the victims of this terrible conflict, we have compiled some points made by recent asset manager commentaries to give you some perspective. This is for your information only and should not be construed as investment advice.   The duration of the conflict is impossible to predict but it should not stray beyond Ukraine. Should it enter NATO territory, the consequences become potentially much more serious.  Assuming it remains within Ukraine, the direct economic impact globally should be limited as Ukraine is a small econ ..read more

UK Autumn Budget - Does This Affect You?
AP Advisers Blog

This blog post is designed to inform British-domiciled expatriates and those returning to (or connected with) the UK of the recent changes in the Autumn budget. The following are some key points: Tax rates for Income Tax, Capital Gain Tax (CGT) or Inheritance Tax (IHT) remained unchanged.   The personal income tax allowance; basic rate (£12,570), and higher rate limits (£37,700 & £150,000) have been frozen until April 2026. This means there should be an increase in Government tax receipts. Similarly, the IHT nil rate band, CGT annual exemption,&nb ..read more
