Until mid-May 2024 Wardah Books is hosting two installation artworks. One by Singapore artist Isabella Ong and another by Thai artist Wantanee Siripattananuntakul. While both artists fulfil their artistic vision by making paper, their starting points cannot be more different.
The installations are curated by OH! Open House, an independent arts organisation that tells Singapore stories through in-situ art at culturally resonant precincts like Joo Chiat or Holland Village. The curators work with artists to install artworks in homes, shops, and common spaces within the precinct. Th ..read more

Dear Reader, We look forward to Ramadan because it is a time for reset, for resolve, and for endurance. We know that it is a time for shedding ruinous habits and for forging new patterns of behaviour that will be beneficial for our lives and bring us closer to Allah and his Prophet ﷺ. Perhaps as Muslims, our resolutions to be better versions of ourselves should be on the first of Ramadan, rather than the first of January.
Ramadan’s capacity to bring about renewal is not lost even on Singapore’s Health Promotion Board (HPB) which in 2018 launched the Ramadan I Quit campaign specifically targeti ..read more

Salaam Dear Reader.
The tide of the year turns. The monsoon darkens the sky and the edges of leaves glisten with silver raindrops. The mercury drops a little; the heat becoming slightly less oppressive for birds to rest and refuel on this island-oasis on the great annual migration along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Battered by wind and rain, these birds have no provision save for an inborn flight path — a fitrah, if you will — for success in this world. Their flight is not a show of mastery, but a testimony of surrender. And their wings beat with all the yearning and fragility of manife ..read more

Dear Reader,
Thank you for submitting your votes for this year’s Readers’ Choice. The results are in.
Your choice is: Sex, Soul and Islam. Written by Osman Sidek and Enon Mansor, and published by Claritas (UK).
Wardah Books is happy that an original work by Singapore authors has won recognition among our readers. Indeed it is a subject that is of immense importance because sex is so pervasive and is so dominant in contemporary culture — even if we don’t want to admit it.
Together with Maktabah Books, we hosted a book club on this title earlier this year and the discussion was lively a ..read more

Salaam Dear Reader,
So few grains of happiness
Measured against the dark
And still the scales balance
— The Weighing by Jane Hirshfield
This year will be remembered for the atrocities that rained down on the civilians of Gaza in Palestine. Scenes of horror upon horror light our screens by day and by night. While it is important to be informed, we have to look away before reaching the point that our hearts become desensitised and turn dark. Such a heart perceives only despair and interprets only cynicism. But a heart that remains faithful knows that Allah’s blessings are beyond measure, no ma ..read more

According to a November 2021 survey by the market research company Rhyme and Reason, GenZs spend 7.2 hours a day watching videos. That’s about half of all their waking hours in a day watching Netflix, Instagram reels, and TikTok. My own generation, GenX, averages just about an hour shy of this at 6.3 hours a day. Fast forward to today in November 2023, GenZ has cranked it up to 9 hours a day. Soon there will not be enough waking hours in a day. The companies that control the media we consume already know that. Reed Hastings, ceo of Netflix said in a 2017 article in The Guardian: “[W ..read more
