ACANA is the sister brand of Orijen, with both being made by Canadian manufacturer Champion Petfoods. If you’ve already read our review of Orijen dog food then you’ll know how reputable this manufacturer is, and it has to be said from the off that ACANA is a very good dog food. The caveat is Orijen is the better of the two, but when it comes to pet food “better” also means “pricier”. For our ACANA dog food review we’ll dig in to the Free-Run Poultry Recipe, which is a benchmark for all in the range. If you want to feed your dog real fresh meat (from the butcher or supermarket), but you’re scared of feeding a raw diet and getting it wrong, then Raw Woof Mix is a fantastic solution. As a “Meal Completer”, you simply add Raw Woof Mix to boneless muscle meat and voila – fully balanced raw! How great is that? No need for a big freezer full of meat and organs, no need for time consuming 6am meal preps, and it’s easy to offer your dog a variety of meat proteins! Website thebugsyshop.com.au Available from The Bugsy Shop (Use this link for 10% off your first order) Bugsy’s is a fantastic Australian brand of air dried raw dog food, and I’ll tell you why in this review. Joanne Cooper, the lead nutritionist behind the brand, created Bugsy after the same realisations I’ve had during the course of my journey in pet food. The brand is named after her late Labrador Bugsy who passed away at the age of 17 after a long, happy, and healthy life. In 2024, most Aussie dogs and cats are still fed processed foods. Joanne’s key observation on the way we feed ou ..read more

Chum Dog Food Review
Pet Food Reviews

Available from Woolworths, Petbarn, Big W, IGA The price of dog food has risen a lot in recent years and in 2024 we’re really feeling the pinch. Even budget brands like Chum feel expensive, and this is a budget brand. The first warning sign with the Chum wet dog foods is the last ingredient – colouring agents. Do you think wet dog food is coloured to make it look pretty to your dog, or look more attractive to you? Most of the time food colourings are used in budget pet foods to make them look more like meat, when that often isn’t the case. As for the Chum dry dog food, Chum “So Crrrrunch ..read more

You’ve heard BARF is great and will work wonders for your dog’s health, but what if I told you there’s one big problem which can lead to all manner of health issues for your dog? It’s not about bad bacteria and pathogens either. It’s about dental health – periodontal disease – which can leave your dog very sick. BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) has many benefits for the health of your dog (or cat), and in many ways I’m a huge fan of this way of feeding. Compared to kibble it wins hands down, but only if you take note of the important points I cover in this article. If you’re in Austra ..read more

The Nosh Project vs Lyka Pet Food
Pet Food Reviews
by David D'Angelo

Many people ask for a comparison of The Nosh Project compared to Lyka, which is understandable given they’re very similar “human grade” dog foods. Both of these dog foods are very good, especially when compared to literally all dry dog foods sold in Australia. There’s a lot to be said for the digestibility and health benefits of food which is more fresh and less processed. Out of the two brands, based on ingredients and analysis alone, I feel Lyka is the better of the two. I’ll leave the comparison of price to you, and it may depend on whether you like to shop in Petbarn or have your dog food ..read more

What’s the Best Kitten Food in Australia?
Pet Food Reviews
by David D'Angelo

Congratulations on your new kitten! Or, shall we be a little bit radical and say “Congratulations on your new Pet Carnivore”, because cats are very much in the carnivore camp! Oddly, when it comes to kitten foods, most brands are made of cereal grains. If not grains, then potatoes, tapioca, peas, beans, or a whole load of other stuff you’ll note isn’t very “carnivore”. So why is this? The reason, mostly, is money. To be more exact – to take your money and turn it into profit, at the expense of your new kitten’s health. It may sound a little crazy, but it’s an important point to make. If you w ..read more

Purr Cat Food Review
Pet Food Reviews

Country of origin Australia Available from Coles One of the most inappropriate ingredients in a food for your pet carnivorous cat is wheat and sorghum, and you’ll find that in the Purr dry cat foods. When I assess the ingredients of cat foods such as this it comes as no surprise so many cats suffer renal failure in their mid to senior years. Being fed cereal grains every day must take a real toll on their kidneys and digestive system which is biologically designed to digest animal products. Yes it’s cheap – good old Coles – but it’s not surprising as wheat and sorghum are cheap ingredi ..read more
