This video was just posted on Youtube by Alex Gillis (author of "A Killing Art"). It show a demonstration by 2 pioneer grandmasters and a team point sparring competition from 1976. I have a deep interest in preserving and resurrecting original Tae Kwon-Do. This was such a rare find, that I wanted to get as many eyes on it as possible. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did ..read more

Anyone familiar with Chung Do Kwan?

I'm still on the search for remote mentorship or consulting as I prepare to open my own school. One suggestion I've received is Chung Do Kwan. There isn't anything near me (I looked at the US CDK Association website and found the nearest school is over 10 hours away). They mention on their website: The USCDKA offers a range of programs and resources to support its members, including training seminars, competitions, and rank certification. It also provides opportunities for members... Click to expand... Read more ..read more

Need help with elbow pain

Hi all, For about a year now I've been suffering from elbow pains. It's on the outside of both elbows, so "tennis elbow". The only physical activities I do are weight lifting and taekwondo. I'm old (over 40), so I don't do anything intense in terms of lifting weights; mostly push-ups, pull-ups, and a variety of machines at the gym. Because of the pain, I've reduced weight and focused more on proper form and breathing. Sometimes I even avoid full range of motion to reduce strain on joints... Read more ..read more

Poomsae Meets Star Wars Chess Hologram

Inspired by the famous chess holograms in the original Star Wars, I'm experimenting with learning the 'shape' of a poomsae by viewing it in miniature. I'm thinking that once students understand the shape of a pattern, it makes it easier to anticipate and learn. I've also added lines on the floor, because I think I read somewhere these are meant to be Chinese characters? Would love to hear your thoughts ..read more

Board breaking requirements

I'm curious what the board breaking requirements are at each of your schools, and how it's handled. School 1 The school I attended as a kid only did board breaking for solid belts. We used kicks on 6x12x1 boards for kids or 12x12x1 boards for adults. I distinctly remember side kick and front kick (the later with the ball of the foot). I remember sometimes it took me a few tries to break, but I got through. This was a long time ago and I don't remember all of the details... Read more ..read more

There's a local school in the small town I just moved to. I think it (like my town) is just starting up. The owner is a 4th degree black belt. If I join, this will be the first martial art school I attend where I'm remotely close in level to the person running it. Even at my highest in my main school, I was 3 degrees underneath the Master. My BJJ professor has been doing BJJ 25 years longer than me. The other schools in the area I briefly attended were a Hapkido school with a 4th... Read more ..read more
