Our trip to the USA
One Step At a Time

Nicky and I were so blessed to have the opportunity to visit my sister in South Bend, Indiana, USA. I thought I’d document the trip in this blog for prosperity so I’d have a place to look back on the memories. Plane trip there We set off from PE/GQ all bright eyed and bushy tailed. The first flight to Jozi was fine, but we had to rush to get to the next one. We kind of had to jump the passport queue because we were running a bit late. We rushed to the gate. Nicky was running ahead so, although I saw him run in to the gate, I lost him when I got there. I was that mom calling “Nicky!” until he ..read more

My ablation operation
One Step At a Time

This blog started off to document everything I went through with infertility, and I’ve documented other medical procedures before. The last time I did an operation was back in 2011 which was a laparoscopy – it was a game changer for me because it cleared out the endometriosis and fibroid and made way for Nicky. So it turned out to be a good thing. I’m at a different stage of life now. I’m older and I’m past the time of having kids. No that I don’t want Nicky to have a sibling it’s just that at my age of 47 there are more risks involved in having kids with older eggs and kids are expensive too ..read more

Nicholas is Nine!

It really seems that just yesterday Nicky was just a little baba crawling around. Today he is a Grade Two pupil who has done so well in the past year, despite all that Covid has thrown at us. Last year this time we celebrated by ourselves and some fluffy toys. This year we had a very small party with just a few family and friends. There were just four kids. But it was great to do something special for a very special kid. Nicky has grown so much this year. He is constantly asking questions. He wants to know all about molecules and atoms and electrons. I have to search answers for questions I h ..read more

What we can learn from elephants
One Step At a Time

Last weekend we took a trip to Addo Elephant Park. We managed to see quite a few animals and it was a real treat to see them. Most fascinating however was watching the gatherings of elephant at the waterholes. We can definitely learn a lot from these magnificent beasts. Of course there were a lot of other animals I enjoyed looking at. As an online teacher I seem do do a lot of stories involving animals and I really appreciated watching the movement of the ones in the flesh. After singing “Buffalo, buffalo, can you run?” very many times, it was nice to see those distinctive horns across his he ..read more

New beginnings and rays of light

I thought I’d dust off this old blog and write a post. It’s been a while since I’ve written here. Life has been eventful but it hasn’t always been easy to write about, to put it into words. Recently there have been some positive changes in my life and I thought I’d write an update. After renting a place for more than two years it was time for a change. Brett’s estate was finally dealt with (thanks to an awesome accountant that kept going with Sars) and I started looking at houses. I looked at a lot online. I wanted a place with a nice yard with trees. A room for Nicky. A place where I could w ..read more

My father’s court case finally over
One Step At a Time

On the 25th of June 2016 my father was hit by a drunk driver and he was never the same after that. Neither was my mother. He spent a good few months in hospital on ventilation and was discharged to a rehab facility on his birthday in September. He stayed there until just before Christmas. I think it’s an experience I wouldn’t wish on anyone. It was really touch and go at some points, especially at the beginning, and the horror of breathing through a ventilator, not being able to speak for a long time must have been simply awful. Being paralysed from the neck down and not being able to move mu ..read more

This time last year I was sitting in the midst of many boxes having made the move between Joburg to PE. It was a decision of faith and it was the right decision for myself and Nicky. We did not know what the year had in store for us but we were in the right place. The first school term started off well. The school was just up the road. My mother fetched Nicky every day. We started going to a local church. In February I started a new job teaching children; which was the kind of job I really enjoyed, although still not really the pay I needed. It turned out to be a very good experience with good ..read more

Book Review: Confessions of a forty-something f##k up
One Step At a Time

This book has come at a good time for me. Although our circumstances are different, I did relate to the heroine of this book – because she is also starting again and also has no clue what she is doing at times. Just changing plans due to life circumstances. Nell has broken up with her fiance in California and returned to England. She finds that a lot has changed since she has been gone. Her friends are married with kids, seemingly existing in perfect lives. She has to move in with a landlord who is obsessed with electricity consumption and full ice cube trays. (He also seems to have it all so ..read more

Fluffy Rivalry

Nicky will be going back to school next week and I thought I’d write a post to record a bit more about how we have been handling lockdown and the little adventures he has been having with his fluffy toys. He recently did have two weeks of school and then school was closed again. During this time I really dashed around trying to get things done until we were grounded again. I’m not trying to be ungrateful. We just have to go with the rules of what has been decided. I also appreciate the time I am having with Nicky. It’s just that I also need a break. Room to breathe. And he needs a dose of nor ..read more
