Nothing highlights the quick passing of time and feels more bittersweet for a mother, than her childrens birthday, and especially so for her last born. When the older kids were small, the stages of growth feels hurried and rushed. You wait in eager anticipation for what comes next and you forget to savour the moments that are so fleeting.  But when your last born is growing up, there’s a different kind of appreciation that comes from already knowing what is comin. You tend to dwell on the moments a little longer, appreciate the small things so much more – The sweet breath of the n ..read more

My Truths – Life After 40
Life and Times of the Fireflies
by Namreen Sonday

For more than half my life, I considered 40 to be old. It didn’t help that the media only ever showcased women at the pinnacle of “youth”, or that brands sold us every product under the sun to help us hold onto our “glory days” or that movies only ever portrayed women of a certain age to be in their prime, or that culture boxed and shelved us once we were past a certain age – and that furthermore, we were resigned to live out the rest of our existence in the shadow because we were ripe, old and beyond what is considered ready for the plucking. It didn’t help that my grandmother died in her ea ..read more

What is a year if not just a series of days strung together. A folder in our life’s journey. A collection of memories – our highlights, accomplishments, trials and life lessons as we journey this earth and Love, grow and evolve – that when we look back at it one day, we associate the years with specific memories. The year we got married, had a child, went on a holiday, started school, matriculated, graduated, bought a house and moved.  What is a year if not a series of days woven together, that over time forms the backdrop of our life’s journey; and what is this blog if I don’t document ..read more

S E V E N T E E N today! Where do I even begin to unload how I feel… Birthdays are always bittersweet for moms. We  get to have front row seats to the early years of our children’s journey – we get to hold their hand while watching them develop and grow – until one day their hands no longer slips as easily into yours and they’re too big to fit onto your lap or the crook of your arm, and their hugs become sparse and their questions start to fade and their fathers try to take the lead…and then suddenly, they develop their wings and begin to fly. But truth be told, we will always obs ..read more

For my Daughter on her 18th Birthday
Life and Times of the Fireflies

E I G H T E E N. . . The word slips awkwardly from my lips… an almost unnatural response to anyone who asks how old you are. Awkward because, even though I know the years have indeed accumulated to this number; there are parts of me that hasn’t quite caught up with the fast spinning wheel of time… can’t comprehend how quickly we’ve gotten here…is still stuck on seeing you as 12. I mean, it feels like just the other day I was caving into cravings of orange suckers and fresh oranges, waiting for you to be born; and all of a sudden we’re standing on the threshold of you turning 18 ..read more

Life Lately – Life Under Lockdown
Life and Times of the Fireflies

I’m going to start this post much the same as I did my first post of 2020 – A New year…Always such a joyful and hopeful time, right? A feeling of a fresh start and a renewal of hope as we sit amongst the embers of the year that has passed. A symbol of new beginnings, a clean slate with which to start (and fail) again and again with the same tiresome resolutions – lose weight, exercise more, eat clean, slow down, be more present. Until we inevitably plunge back into the rat race, the hamster wheel, the busy lifestyle that distracts us from what’s important.  But not this year though. This ..read more

It’s strange how, when your first born reaches new milestones, it signifies new beginnings as you stumble your way through fresh terrain and navigate through this unchartered territory. But when your last born reaches certain milestones, it signifies the end – the end of and era for you. The last aches of a pregnancy. The last time you will be enveloped in new born cuddles. The last first steps…first tooth…first word. The last time you’ll have your child occupy space in your bed; and it makes you savour every moment that much more. You are my last born Zaydaan. My last glimpse into the abyss ..read more

It’s been quite a while, hasn’t it. To think, the year  started off so promisingly. So full of hope and dreams and a strong commitment to accomplishing some major life goals. But as is the general consensus of Life and  Time; the one flurries past while the other whittles away –  and before you’re know it, you’re stranded in the centre of the whirlwind of life, trying to make sense of it all. As life continues to be this great unfolding of events – one grand life altering experience proceeded by another and another – the rapid pace at which it flows has made it near imposs ..read more

Recipe – Murgh Malai (Chicken in a Creamy Cashew Nut Gravy)
Life and Times of the Fireflies

A lot of times, food; like music and scents; can trigger memories. It can transport you back to childhood, a special moment, a holiday abroad. A moment in time forever frozen and brought vividly back to life with a single meal. This is one of those recipes for me. It takes me back to my last day in India almost 20 years ago! I was travelling India alone with my mom for just over a month – something I think I took for granted at the time – but also a journey and experience that was completely unforgettable to me. There’s something about travelling to your homeland; about meeting family that’s ..read more
