Ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization

Day One joins the majority of citizens in expressing our fury with, and adamant opposition to, today’s ruling overturning Roe v. Wade.   This decision will not end abortion -- it will end safe abortion for hundreds of thousands of people, especially for youth, people with fewer financial resources, people of color, and people isolated by geography, religion, language, or other barriers. Those with money and power will likely face few or no obstacles.  To be clear, this decision is violence against women, all those who can become pregnant, and others. Not only will survivors of d ..read more

Back to School 2021: Resources for Students, Parents, & Caregivers

As summer ends, many people are going back to school in person for the first time in nearly two years. This is despite the impacts of the delta variant of COVID-19; there are more than twice as many cases reported now than last year, but states have been reluctant to completely shut down again. Although vaccines are now being offered to kids as young as 12, which could potentially allow for schools to open up more for certain age groups, it is looking more likely that more schools will have to be online or have virtual/online classes offered-- forms that are less than ideal for the students a ..read more

At Day One, we provide services for survivors of domestic and dating violence, but we also provide preventive education for people who have not experienced abuse. Part of this education included identifying what is healthy in a relationship - because knowing what is healthy helps you figure out what is unhealthy. With this post, we want to highlight  “green flags,” or signs that you are in a healthy relationship.  Respectful Communication Respect is one of the most important green flags of a healthy relationship, because it shows that you both have the freedom to be yourselves and ..read more

On the morning of June 28th, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a prominent gay bar in Greenwich Village, prompting a violent uprising from the LGBTQ+ community. On the one year anniversary of the Stonewall riots, gay activists organized the Christopher Street Liberation march during New York’s first Gay Pride Week.  Since then, June has been dedicated to raising awareness for LGBTQ+ community, celebrating LGBTQ+ achievements, and speaking up about the constant fight for LGBTQ+ rights.  In 2021, many Pride celebrations have shifted online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing ..read more

By: Emily Grzesiowski April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), which since the 2000s has been organized by the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. In 2001, the first SAAM was born as a result of tireless efforts to bring awareness and justice to sexual violence by organizations all around the country.  The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘We Can Build Safe Online Spaces’. It centers around technology abuse and how sexual violence can intrude into our text messages, social media, and more. Sexual violence is not just rape or sexual assault; it can be anything that can cause ..read more

Statement in Response to Anti-Asian Hate

On March 16th, eight people were killed in shootings at 3 Atlanta metro area spas. Six of those killed were Asian women. This is just the most recent in an increasing string of violent anti-Asian attacks. In the past year, and especially the past few months, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) have experienced terrifyingly high rates of racist violence, many purportedly influenced by xenophobia tied to COVID-19.  Just this week, national advocacy group Stop AAPI Hate released a report compiling nearly 4,000 hate incident reports in one year from across the United States.  Th ..read more

Image via The Gender Spectrum Collection by Autumn Gillette For LGBTQ+ young people, having a supportive adult around can be the biggest contributor to future well-being. A strong allyship often starts with small changes to your everyday behavior.  The pandemic has made the experiences of young people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, trans or questioning even more challenging than usual. While for some, the need for virtual learning has taken away access to valuable mental health services, others are stuck inside homes with unsupportive adults. The consequences can have lasting imp ..read more

by Emily Grzesiowski and Emma Porter This February is Black History Month. At Day One, we want to acknowledge some of the Black voices that have truly changed history over the past few years with their activism, resilience, and prerogative for change through the lens of social media. These contemporaries continue to inspire us with their hard work and efforts to cultivate an anti-racist world.  Tarana Burke, founder of the #metoo movement Image from TIME Though #metoo went viral in 2017 due to a number of celebrities, many of them white, coming out and speaking on their stories of assaul ..read more

Declining This Rose: Why The Bachelor Franchise Needs a Clean Up

by Samantha Ketter It’s time for reality TV to get, well, real. The most recent season of The Bachelorette has exhausted me. I’ve been pretty uncomfortable, angry, and generally disenchanted with the faux-romance constructed by this highly edited narrative. There’s been too much negativity to bear: the abruptness of Clare Crawley’s departure, the swooning over Dale, how she manipulated the rest of the men in the house, Bennet’s draining belittling and unfortunate surprise return... The Bachelor franchise has long been rewarding toxic behaviors, setting a stage for manipulative contestants and ..read more

By Makenzie Collins Since 2003, Day One has partnered with youth to end dating abuse and domestic violence through community education, supportive services, legal advocacy, and leadership development.  In 2019, Day One reached a landmark milestone of 100,000 young people supported over the past 15 years. Today, Day One’s impact far exceeds 100,000, as we made all of our services virtually accessible in March 2020. As we commemorate this past year and the significant increase in our outreach, we know there are many more survivors who are unable to seek help with the current stay-at-home o ..read more
