I had a sense of the plot, most characters and certainly the ending. However, I had not written an outline and I had only done a smattering of research. I am also embarrassed to say that

The song quickly became a Scottish custom. The traditional use being to bid farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight on Hogmanay (New Years Eve). By extension, it can also be sung at funerals, graduations and a farewell or ending to other occasions.
The song spreadfrom Scotland to all over the British Isles. Then the Scottish, British, Irish and Welsh took it with them as they emigrated around the world, spreading the custom as they went.
