Lac La Biche Museum

In the next few weeks, we’ll have new and exciting content at the Museum. You may have noticed a few fresh new faces over the summer, that being Martin and myself (Marcel)!  Martin and I both completed the Masters of Museum Studies program at the University of Toronto, although we graduated a few years apart. Despite being aware of each other’s existence, we had never actually met until now. It’s a small world in the museum industry, and chances are high that professionals in this field will eventually become familiar with your work and who you are. As a great example, Martin and I will ..read more

Museum Update
Lac La Biche Museum

For the past few weeks at the museum, our parking lot has been under construction. Unfortunately, that meant that we had few if any visitors. Nevertheless, the museum carried on with our work in creating new programming and researching/installing new exhibits. Many of them you can see now at at the MacArthur and Bold Centre buildings.  Our summer student’s, Amy and Kali, tenure at the museum is coming to an end, a sad day for Lac La Biche Museum. Many of our satellite exhibits that I’m sure many of you have enjoyed over the past few months were created by the two of them. They are headi ..read more

What is your role at the museum: I am the tourism and social media coordinator. I am a ‘Jack of All Trades’ at the Museum. Essentially, I run social media, develop new programming opportunities, and design exhibits. I also answer the phones if you ever decide to call in!  What inspired me to work in the museum field: I was originally a radio broadcaster – museums weren’t on my horizon. Early on in my career, it was apparent that I was heavily invested in telling the history of Canada. I used my time within the broadcast booth to create stories involving the history of our country. I del ..read more

This week’s staff highlight is coming from none other than Jennifer Mueller!  Role: Museum Manager/Director What inspired me to work in the museum field: I always loved archeology and history from the time I was a small child. There was a farmer’s field across from my childhood home where I could find bits and pieces of old glass and ceramics. Every time it was plowed, I would go and look for new treasures. As a summer student I had an opportunity to work at the Lac La Biche Mission Historical Site, and I really enjoyed learning about local history and developing exhibits. Later in life ..read more

Another week, another blog post!  This week, we’ll be focusing on little known history for the Lac La Biche area – the RCMP. Or at the time of the twentieth century, they were known as the Northwest Mounted Police (NWMP). The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) holds a significant place in Canada’s history, deeply woven into the fabric of the nation. In early 1901, the NWMP established its detachment in Lac La Biche, marking the beginning of its presence in the region. Initially, only one constable was assigned to the detachment, although limited information exists about their name or ..read more
