Bracing for vertebral compression fracture

Our clinic is currently working on creating a guideline for compression fracture management. Currently there is a plan to make bracing part of that management plan. Our neurosurgeons routinely requests this as well. Up-to-date says that bracing really does not do anything, citing a number of small studies without efficacy, and that they do not routinely use it. Are people here on the board still bracing for their compression fractures patients? (Source: Student Doctor Network ..read more

Background: My partner will be working in the Washington DC area with virtual days on Monday and Friday, which would allow her to stay with me on weekends if I live close enough. I am very interested in pursuing neurosurgery. UVA (projected debt - $130,000): Pros 2-3 hours from my partner, so we would see each other most weeks Inova Fairfax track would allow me to live with my partner during clinical years Gives the impression of collaborative students and faculty... Hi everyone, I’m grateful for the acceptances and thank everyone here for all the help throughout the cycle. I’m waitlisted at my dream school, so currently choosing between Georgetown and UICOM. As context, am interested in surgery (or anesthesia). Georgetown (Tuition: $67k/yr) Pros: +++ Pass/Fail for first two years AND core clinical rotations, tiered grading for the last phase, no AOA: I am super neurotic about 3rd year. I’m introverted, so it may take me time to get comfortable... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network ..read more

Hello everyone! I am fortunate to have been accepted to both Mayo and Washu and am completely torn about what to do. A bit of background, I will be 22 starting in medical school and still looking for friendships and relationships. I am interested in going into general surgery or neurosurgery. I am from the west coast, so both areas are equally far away. Financials are not a decision factor since both have been very generous. Unfortunately, the final decision time is in just 2 weeks!! WashU... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network ..read more

USUHS vs HPSP specialty options

Question for the group. When it comes to non primary care, selective medical specialities such as Ortho, ENT, optho, etc, is it easier to match into the specialty of your choice if you demonstrate your full throated embrace of military medicine by attending USUHS vs a more reluctant approach to the military if you do HPSP? It seems I notice more people getting competive residencies such as orthopedics, neurosurgery, etc if they went USUHS vs HPSP, but I don't know for certain and so I... More States Cut Training Requirements for Some International Medical Graduates Alternative pathways to licensing for IMGs spreads beyond Tennessee www.medpagetoday.com Does anyone have experience with this? I'm aware of one pain group that hired a foreign neurosurgeon to be their in-house pain surgeon/first assist at their ASC. "Bryan Carmody, MD, MPH, a pediatric nephrologist at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, who has long studied data on residency and the Match process, said that the influx of labor would be good for academic medical centers in... Hi all, would greatly appreciate some insight! I haven't heard much about any school and would love to know more students' opinions! I'm most interested in acute care specialties like EM, surgery, anesthesiology, pulm/neuro critical care, etc. All three schools have about the same tuition (~70k), cost of living, pass/fail grading, and a near 99% match rate. My top factors are: 1. a patient-centered curriculum 2. a supportive school community (faculty and students). 3. community service... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network ..read more
