The Hockey Celly vs. the Football Touchdown Dance
SI Kids

Do you think that hockey cellys are better than touchdown dances or vice versa? Hockey cellys, like Patrick Kane’s “heartbreaker,” are certain to make you smile, and fans go crazy for touchdown dances like the Seahawks’, “If It Isn’t Love,” boogie. Are touchdown dances better than hockey cellys, or do hockey cellys take the cake? Well…let's just say we will settle that argument with this article. Besides the “Heartbreaker,” there are some other epic hockey cellys like “the Conor McGregor'' from Boston Bruins’ Brad Marchand, and Winnipeg Jets’ Teemu Selanne’s “Shooting the Duck,” which he did a ..read more

Think about everything you know about gymnastics and cheerleading and imagine them combined into a single college sport. That sums up Acrobatics & Tumbling, which is taking big steps to become a major NCAA event. Acrobatics & Tumbling takes poise, power, strength, balance, adaptability and so much more! These traits were on display earlier this month at a meet at Morgan State. There were 20 heats broken up into six different events: compulsory, acro, pyramid, toss, tumbling, and team. Each heat is judged based on various criteria, such as executing a certain skill or how difficult the ..read more

Some things are bigger than basketball. The annual Jimmy V Classic, named after Jim Valvano, NC State’s famously enthusiastic men’s basketball coach, began 29 years ago to raise money for cancer. This year, the event returned to Madison Square Garden for its 20th year with an epic college basketball double header: Illinois’ Fighting Illini (ranked No. 20) battling Florida Atlantic’s Owls (11), and North Carolina’s Tar Heels (9) facing off with the reigning NCAA national champions, the UConn Huskies (5).  In the first matchup, the Fighting Illini shot 63 percent from the field and Terrence ..read more

On a December 1, the first-place Celtics hosted the fourth-place 76ers on a rainy night in Boston. It was an electric game that featured multiple ejections and big plays. The Celtics narrowly escaped with a 125–119 win, improving their record to 15–4 and 9–0 at home. 76ers stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey were sidelined from play with an injury and illness, respectively. Four other 76ers players were ruled out with various injuries and illnesses. The Celtics didn’t have a clean injury report either with All-Star center Kristaps Porzingis sidelined with a calf strain. These teams are two of t ..read more

SI Kids

Fei Fabiola Francesca “Fifi” Garcia, age 11, has nearly as many nicknames as she does trophies. Her soccer coach, Rob Rennie, has crowned her the “Queen of the Magical Fairies,” a title she inherited from USWNT midfielder Ashley Sanchez, whom Rennie also coached. In the same breath, however, he describes her as a “tropical bird,” a unique player so talented he just has to get out of her way sometimes. Other nicknames on the field include “Final Boss” and “Slasher,” for the way she streaks across the pitch. Or maybe those don’t quite cover it either. . . . “She’s like an assassin, really ..read more

Sled Hockey: Huge Hits, Top Speeds, and Next-Level Dangles

Did you know that there is a sport that can be even faster than hockey, with hits even harder, and that has disappearing dangling pucks? I present you with sled hockey! Sled hockey is a very fun sport, in which athletes sit in special sleds to skate on an ice rink and play hockey. The athletes play using the same rules, the same penalties, the same puck, and the same nets as “stand up” hockey. They play 5-on-5 with a goalie and the only difference is the equipment. The sled is like a big skate that the athletes are strapped to with two long blades on the bottom. Sleds are very expensive. A che ..read more

SI Kids

A rainy day in Hartford, Connecticut saw the USMNT lose 3–1 to Germany with goals from Christian Pulisic, İlkay Gündoğan, Niclas Füllkrug, and Jamal Musiala. Early on the USMNT was on fire, building well and making good runs. In the first five minutes U.S. forward Christian Pulisic got in behind the German back line and scored to make it 1–0, but the referee called the play offside, disallowing the goal.  Pulisic continued to shine throughout the first half, helping the USMNT get some very good goal scoring opportunities. On the other side of the ball, Germans Jamal Musiala and Leroy San ..read more

The UConn Huskies began last season unranked and ended the season as national champions. In one of the most dominant performances in tournament history, the Huskies pummeled a gritty San Diego State University team, 76-59.  The win marked the fifth NCAA national champion in the program's history, and the first under coach Dan Hurley. Now the reigning champions are locked-in and reloaded with talent. Unlike last year, they are not flying under the radar. They are ranked No. 6 in the preseason. Although they lost their captains Adama Sanogo and Andre Jackson—and shooting phenom Jordan Hawki ..read more

Harvard University is known for its academics. It is one of the best universities in the world and is a member of the prestigious Ivy League. The school has many famous alumni, including eight U.S. Presidents. What most people don’t know is that Harvard has one of the most historic college football programs in the country. The Crimson have won seven national championships and one Rose Bowl—pretty good for a school that isn’t known for football! Low-Scoring Origins On March 14, 1847, Harvard University played McGill University in what would end up being one of the first football games ever play ..read more

Why Can't Us Kids Run a Marathon?
SI Kids
by Rusty Smith

Some people cheered and some people raged when a 6-year-old recently ran the Flying Pig Marathon. ”Why can’t we run a marathon?” say some kids that love running. “Is it safe for kids to run a marathon?” ask their parents.  I decided to research the official age requirements for 20 of the top marathons in the world. I also asked the race directors of those marathons what they think about kids running marathons. Here is what I learned. Age requirements for marathons vary. Most marathons require runners to be either 16 or 18 years old. Some marathons don’t have an age restriction, and some h ..read more
