I’ve been working with schools since 2011 to deliver an effective code curriculum for middle school and older students. Based on that experience, I would suggest that they best way to teach code to students, is by using the web languages: HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. The main benefits of teaching code with the web coding languages: Both visual and non-visual learners will find a place for them with web languages. HTML5 and CSS3 are largely visual, where the results of the code are immediately seen on screen. At the same time, you can use JavaScript to teach the finer details of writing code ..read more

SOPPA Compliant Code Courses

Hi! Just a quick note regarding SOPPA compliance: StudioWeb has always been 100% SOPPA compliant. From inception in 2011, we designed our platform to protect student identity: By default, students and teachers work on StudioWeb’s code teaching platform anonymously. Teachers ALWAYS have full control of the data on StudioWeb. If a student adds their name or email address, this is (first of all) totally optional, and can be deleted from the system easily by both students and teachers.  StudioWeb does not sell any data to 3rd parties. In fact, the information we do track (progress and perf ..read more

Recently a teacher had a few great questions about teaching code with StudioWeb: I am looking for a computer skills enrichment class for students in 5th grade through 7th grade. My questions: How a student would see the course and how the teacher sees it? Is there a teacher screen to view progress and assign work? Also are there any issues with Mac Users? Answers: Teachers and students see them nearly the exact same way, except teachers have all the lessons unlocked, have direct access to all the quiz answers and of course, the teacher’s dashboard which displays progress reports, grades and ..read more

StudioWeb teaches what the developer community calls the web stack. This includes the following languages: HTML5 CSS3 JavaScript SQL PHP (optional) Python (optional) There are many other optional languages (and tech) that can be used in the web stack, but we teach the above for a variety of reasons, least of which is that they are extremely popular in industry. How long does it take to be able to build real websites? I am often asked, how long does it take to complete the StudioWeb web stack courses? Well, a student sent this great graphic of their progress … they kept meticulous records. He ..read more

Make Distance Learning Fun for Teachers and Students

To make distance learning work, you just can’t take the traditional classroom model, and put it on Zoom. This is stressful for teachers, and boring for students. … Having spoken to students and teachers, they generally don’t like it. How do you Make Distance Learning work? The curriculum and the teaching method have to be modified for distance learning to work. That means a few things: Lessons should emphasize pre recorded videos that students can watch at their own pace. Video lessons should be created for distance learning.
