Contemplation On Divine Love
Jesuit and Ignatian Spirituality Australia

This Valentine’s Day – Stop and relish the “long and loving gaze” of the One who so loves you and finds you so precious!   In the year 269 AD, Valentine was sentenced to a three-part execution of a beating, stoning, and finally decapitation. The story goes that the last words he wrote were in a note to Asterius’ daughter for whom he had cured of blindness. He inspired today’s romantic missives by signing it, “from your Valentine.” In Italy, Saint Valentine’s keys are given to lovers “as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the giver’s heart.” The Contemplation on Divin ..read more

Support for my Enduring Faith
Jesuit and Ignatian Spirituality Australia

When praying this month’s spiritual exercise, I sat with the question: Where has my faith endured during my life? And the response was: When I have been most fragile. Over the past 12 months, I have been faced with health challenges with no resolution in sight. Three things have been my anchor during these times: trusting I can find God in all things, practicing the Examen regularly, and taking some time out to deeply reflect and decide on the trajectory of my life. Finding God in all things. I trust this. That God is in all. I am tethered to a stable anchor when I receive the divine in not o ..read more

This is a brief reflection of the blessed time we recently enjoyed as a family, sailing among some of the beautiful Whitsunday Islands.  The islands visited included South Mole, Lindeman, Shaw, Goldsmith, Thomas, Whitsunday, and Hook Islands. The photos are shared to illustrate the utter magnificence of these paradise places, as well as the contrast of the plastic pollution. These experiences illustrate the different narratives at play in the world as reflected in the Two Standards of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises. The face of freedom, life and beauty, unity, belonging and expansivene ..read more

A deliberate discerned choice
Jesuit and Ignatian Spirituality Australia
by JISA

Recently I caught up with a colleague who like me had moved from a Jesuit education ministry to another sponsored by the Society of Jesus in Australia. Whilst my provincial had asked me to take a position in giving retreats, my friend John had made a deliberate, discerned choice to ease back on his long association with school leadership to become a provincial assistant in Jesuit Social Ministries. As a layman his own long career had allowed him first hand acquaintance with different religious schools and their particular ‘charisms’. For John there were a number of factors about the Ignatian ..read more

Marking 100 years of Teilhard de Chardin’s Mass on the World
Jesuit and Ignatian Spirituality Australia
by JISA

A seminal essay on Teilhard’s thinking about Eucharist and making the whole earth our altar, was first written in 1923 and published in 1961. Michael McGirr from Eureka Street writes: “The essay begins with a moment of stillness. Teilhard finds himself at the start of a new day perched out of doors on a high place. He has no bread, wine, or altar. Instead, ‘I will make the whole earth my altar and on it will offer you all the labours and sufferings of the world.’ His utensils for saying such a Mass are simply ‘the depths of a soul laid widely open to all the forces which in a moment will rise ..read more

From the authors Kathleen Deignan CND and Libby Osgood CND: “A contemplative resource gleaned from the wisdom of visionary priest-scientist Teilhard de Chardin. Sisters Deignan and Osgood have captured the illuminating power of the “found prayers, poems, and hymns” shining throughout his written corpus, presenting them in a unifying format to awaken in the contemplative who prays these hours what was so palpably alive in Teilhard: “the cosmic sense of the sacred.” READ MORE ..read more
