TCNF has resumed its long tradition of presenting Rules of the Road Bike Clinics in person. On June 28, Cynthia Newton teamed up with Go Lloyd and The Street Trust for a one-hour Rules of the Road clinic that covered the basics (bike lanes, crosswalks, sidewalk riding), new laws and infrastructure (Idaho Stop, crossbikes, two-step turn Q’s) and what to do after a bicycle accident. TCNF is happy to announce its sponsorship of the Community Cycling Center’s 2023 annual Holiday Bike Drive.  CCC’s annual Drive provides hundreds of kids each year with a bike, helmet and instruction on the rules of the road and safe riding practices. Work towards his year’s drive is already underway; community members are donating used bikes and mechanics are working weekly to refurbish them to like-new condition for the drive. On May 25, 2023, the Washington Post published a long, detailed article about systemic problems in the Social Security disability adjudication process written by senior reporter Lisa Rein. The article uses data published by the Social Security Administration to show how the adjudication process has become less fair over time.  It details the increase in claim denials at nearly every level of the adjudication process. Chris Thomas Talks Oregon Bike Law With Local Cycling Club

On Friday, September 9, TCNF held its annual Community Service Day at Sellwood Riverfront Park in SE Portland.  In partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation, the TCNF crew spent the day pulling weeds, picking up trash, painting bat boxes, and building a fence.  It was a rewarding experience to take a break from legal work and contribute to the community outside of the office.  Learn how to get involved with Portland Parks volunteer opportunities here. On August 6th, TCNF attorney Chris Thomas joined Oregon Walks for a campaign to educate the public about Oregon crosswalk laws.  Oregon Walks is an organization that advocates for safer streets for people walking.  Event organizer Vivek Jeevan designed a 3 question quiz about Oregon crosswalk laws, and volunteers including Chris quizzed members of the public at the weekly downtown Portland Farmers Market.  Questions included whether legal crosswalks can exist without paint on the ground, how pedestrians show their intent to proceed across a crosswalk, and whether bicyclists may ..read more
