Fifty guests attended the award ceremony for Pedro Tarquis and Pablo Martínez Vila. Josh Terndrup and the Antioch Ministries International (AMI) team in Thailand are asking God to work in the Buddhist world the way he has in the Muslim world Terndrup, a church planter, read a book called The Wind in the House of Islam, which shares how, in the last 20 years, there has been a more significant church-planting movement in the Muslim-background nations than there has been in the previous 1,500 years.  “ That really touched our hearts”, Terndrup said. “That really moved us to believe, 'God, would you do something like that in this generation among Buddhist-background peo ..read more

A 21st century Reformation: Inevitable pruning
Evangelical Focus Blog
by Walid Zailaa

In a world that is constantly evolving and changing, it is crucial that the church remains open to reevaluating its practices and beliefs. The concept of reformation has been a cornerstone of the Protestant faith, but perhaps it is time for the church today to take a closer look at what reformation truly means in our modern context. Are we living out the teachings of Jesus in a way that reflects love and compassion? Are we willing to challenge the status quo and make necessary changes before it is too late? Are we prepared to endure the painful process of pruning? In what follows, I suggest th ..read more

The Tauron arena, in Krakow, witnessed on 13 April a large event organised by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA) in partnership with evangelical churches from across Poland. As it happened in other European countries in recent years, the US evangelistic organisation led by Franklin Graham prepared the event alongside local churches. Poland is a traditionally Roman Catholic country where less there are less than 1% of evangelical Christians. #A2c# [photo_footer] Michael W. A ‘distant’ European Union? Join us in Brussels!
Evangelical Focus Blog
by Jeff Fountain

Recent articles on the Christian news website Evangelical Focus, ahead of the upcoming European Parliament elections in June, reflected the views of evangelical Christians that the European Union was ‘a distant entity that had little impact on their daily lives’. Brussels, others felt, was part of the problem of a continent that had abandoned its Christian roots. Such views tell us perhaps more about evangelicals than about the EU. That is my conclusion after researching evangelical views on European integration three years ago. Twenty evangelical leaders I interviewed, representing a wide ran ..read more

“The fight continues”. This is how Päivi Räsänen, a member of the Parliament of Finland and grandmother of 11, reacted to the news that the Supreme Court will re-open a legal case about freedom of speech she won in two lower courts. Despite losing in the Helsinki District Court (March 2022) and the Helsinki Court of Appeals (November 2023), the public prosecutors will try to demonstrate again that Päivi Räsänen did indeed violate the Penal Code by insulting gay people in a booklet published in 2004 and social media posts in 2019 with a Bible verse homosexuality. In the process so far, six judg ..read more

One year of war in Sudan: “The population, especially Christians, continue to suffer”

In April 2023, a war between Sudan's Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out. The SAF is led by the President of the transitional council, Abdelfattah al Burhan, and the paramilitary group by his former vice-president, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (alias Hemedti). One year later, “the war continues and, according to our sources, the partners we work with, peace does not seem to be coming any time soon”, Fikiru Mehari, the operations head of Open Doors East Africa, told Spanish news website Protestante Digital. With around 14,000 civilians killed and over 8,000 wounded, the con ..read more

With “an eye on Russia”, Europe’s evangelicals see need for defensive rearmament

The thousands of deaths in Ukraine and the growing tension in the Middle East are being followed with concern in Europe, and Christians see the need make tough steps in the face of future conflicts. This sense of uncertainty, which Evangelical Focus has identified after talking to evangelicals in six countries, seems widespread. The price of peace in Europe could be a factor driving the growing interest in voting in the European elections of 6-9 June. An Eurobarometer macro-survey expects the turnout to reach a historic 65%. Romania’s “anxiety” “Romanians continue their lives and businesses, b ..read more

The apathy of ‘Paterson’

I have seen few such deep, accurate and sensitive portraits of the mediocrity of ordinary life in the West as some of the films of Jim Jarmusch, and specifically Paterson (2016). Starring Adam Driver, before he was known for his appearances in Silence, Star Wars or A Marriage Story, the film tells the life of a bus driver, commonly unsatisfied who lives his work, his relationships and also his passion: writing with the usual mediocrity that characterises us. The film focuses on that strong point that Jarmusch has already explored in other productions, such as Broken Flowers, with Bill Murray ..read more
