Self-esteem is in crisis. Several voices and publications point in this. For example, a document published by the private British company The Body Shop, which was acquired in November 2023 by a German investment fund, has recently pointed out that half of the world’s population has low levels of self-esteem. According to its Global Self Love Index, the company has scored an overall average of 53 points on a scale of 0 to 100. “This means that nearly one in two people worldwide fall on the negative side of the scale, identifying more with self-doubt than self-esteem”, the report reads. The Senate of France, the main obstacle in the race to make the access to abortion a constitutional right, voted on 28 February with a large majority in favour of a text that closes a long debate. With 267 ‘yes’ and 50 ‘no’, the higher chamber put and end to the resistance of the last months as it finally accepted the wording of a new constitutional article that will read: “The law determines the conditions by which is exercised the freedom of women to have recourse to an abortion, which is guaranteed”. It was France’s president Emmanuel Macron who pushed this move, in reaction to a decision o ..read more

Can European laws stop hate?

With antisemitism and anti-Muslim hatred on the rise, both the European Commission and the European Parliament recently addressed hate speech and hate crimes. These have to stop. The Parliament calls for more rules. But how can we both protect free speech and fight hate speech, especially in absence of a definition of the latter? In December, the European Commission issued a joint communication entitled “No place for hate. A Europe united against hate.” The Commission starts with expressing their concern about recent incidents and attacks targeting the Jewish community in Europe. Muslims acros ..read more

Preaching about preaching
Evangelical Focus Blog

I think you have to be very careful when it comes to preaching about preaching. It is tempting to do so. After all, Christianity is a revelation based faith, flowing from a speaking, self-revealing and relational God, with a big emphasis on the importance of preaching (despite the frequent attempts to deny its importance).  But to get side-tracked into preaching about preaching seems to be a precarious ledge with some deep ravines on every side.  For example: 1. Who are the listeners? If you are preaching at a pastors’ conference then it is probably highly appropriate to preach about ..read more

The figures for the persecution of Christians in Nigeria have reached unprecedented heights. The organisation Open Doors reports 4,565 murders in 2023 alone, covering practically all of the 4,998 people who were killed worldwide for their faith in Christ last year. However, are “the absolute lowest of what could happen”, they said. Now, the International Society for Liberties and Rule of Law (known as Intersociety) states that the number of Christians killed in Nigeria in 2023 exceeds 8,000. “The combined forces of the government protected Islamic Jihadists and the country’s Security Forces ar ..read more

The Spanish government, led by Social Democrat prime minister Pedro Sánchez has elevated the issue of freedom of religion and of conscience. The ministry of justice will now have a new directorate of religious affairs, to improve its relationships with the faith groups in the country. The move comes with an effort to “guarantee the exercise of the right to freedom of religion and worship”, a statement issued by the government said. The Directorate General for Religious Freedom will be headed by Mercedes Murillo Muñoz, an expert in the field, who until now headed the Sub-Directorate dedicated t ..read more

Many cancer patients from all over Romania come to the city of Cluj-Napoca for long treatments, not always having a place to stay for them and their families. That is why Violeta Goron founded Casa Filip (Philip House) in 2016, a place that aims to be “accessible and beautiful”, where people with cancer “would be surrounded by help, support, love and care”, she told Romanian TV broadcaster Alfa Omega. Everything started in 2015, when Goron was in the hospital with his husband Filip, who had cancer and died at 36, after an intense period of suffering. She met families who, in order to stay with ..read more

The data published by a report published by the Evangelical Alliance in Northern Ireland has “surprised” even those who were aware of the strong presence of Christianity in the region. The survey, conducted by polling agency Savanta ComRes in spring 2023, shows that 50% of people in Northern Ireland identify themselves as “practising Christians”. 17% of the surveyed said they had no religion, and another 31.3% identified as a non-practising Christian. The study revealed that “23% go to church each week”, 35% pray on a weekly basis and 13% “personally read the Bible”. #A1c# [photo_footer] Key f ..read more

Northern Ireland: Who are the Good News People?
Evangelical Focus Blog

Northern Ireland today is much like other parts of the United Kingdom or Ireland, in some respects at least. But in other ways, especially when it comes to religious identification and practice, we are very different. The 2021 census data for England and Wales shows that 46% of the population identify as Christian, significantly less that the 59% reported just ten years previously. The results for Northern Ireland are, however, very different, with 80% of people here still identifying as Christian.
