A survey by Quaest shows that 99 percent of Brazilians believe that the environmental catastrophe which hit the state of Rio Grande do Sul is linked to climate change — echoing the opinions of the scientific community. While 64 percent of people blame climate change entirely for the floods and torrential rainfall currently chastising Brazil’s southernmost state, another 30 percent see partial causality — while 5 percent see little connection between the two. Finance Minister Fernando Haddad on Thursday announced a BRL 50.9 billion (USD 9.8 billion) package of measures to address the public calamity in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which has been ravaged by extreme floods. The measures will be included in a provisional decree to be signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, which will take effect immediately. The Federal Prosecution Office on Tuesday charged Congressman Chiquinho Brazão and his younger brother, Domingos Brazão, for the 2018 murder of Rio de Janeiro City Councilor Marielle Franco and her driver, Anderson Gomes.
