When I think of new beginnings, I think of a sunrise: specifically, that first peek of light on a hot summer’s day. The temperature hasn’t risen yet, but you know it’s coming. You blink away the night, and the edges of dreams you can’t quite remember. The sky turns blue. Cloudless. A blue-blank page, full of birdsong and possibility.   At Creative Write-it, we’ve been going through quite the transformation this year. We found our groove as a new team, ran the first round of our INKubator Program, launched The Creative Write-it Podcast, breathed new life into our blog, and refreshed our ..read more

What Makes an Enticing First Line?
Creative Write-it
by

First lines are super important. After judging a book by its cover (we’re all guilty of this!) and reading the blurb, first lines are the deciding factor on whether to keep reading the book or pick up another one instead. They have an important job to capture the reader’s attention, create a sense of intrigue, and to make the reader want to keep reading about the protagonist’s journey.  We asked our writing mentors to share their favourite first lines, what they love about them, and why they think they’re so effective.  Amy I write this sitting in the kitchen sink. - I C ..read more

Parents often ask us how they can encourage their kids to continue writing during the school holidays. Of course, hearing how keen kids are to continue their writing adventures is music to our ears! And we have PLENTY of ideas. Here are our top five tips on how you can spark your kids’ creativity and get them writing during the school holidays.  1. Set a writing goal A great way to encourage kids to write is to help them come up with a writing goal as it gives them something rewarding to aim towards. The Next Stage on the Creative Write-it Journey
Creative Write-it

Creative Write-it is turning 10-years-old! Ten years ago in December 2011, Amy Han ran a writing workshop at Doncaster Library. That was the beginning of Creative Write-it, and everything grew quickly, from workshops in libraries and schools to Amy teaching kids in her kitchen. For six years, Creative Write-it had a home in the studio in Sylvander Street in Balwyn North.   Although COVID-19 has been a disruption, it’s also shown us that the things that make Creative Write-it special are how we work with young writers, how we support and encourage them – it’s not always reliant on ..read more

Creative Write-it

Writing a novel is a journey. It often takes more time and is more challenging than writing a short story. It’s very common to get to the middle of your novel and feel uninspired and not be sure of what to write next or how to make it to the end of your story. You’re not alone, though – this is a very common experience and happens to most (if not all) writers! Our writing mentors have gotten stuck before (many times), so they’ve taken the time to share their tips below.  Amy recommends making a scene jar …  I like to make myself a 'scene jar' for when I get stuck. This jar is full o ..read more

WHAT DO WE DO AT CREATIVE WRITE-IT?
Creative Write-it
by
2y ago
At Creative Write-it, our Story Writing Clubs and Writing Mentorships give our young writers the freedom to write creatively. School often requires them to write to specific prompts, write within certain time limits, or to write in styles that don't excite them. This can be a great challenge, but there is so much more fun to be had with creative writing than our school curriculums have space for. A lack of balance can lead them to think that writing is 'boring' and 'hard'. Here at Creative Write-it, we aim to provide this balance by working with our young writers and allowing them the oppo ..read more
