Barbell Vs. Dumbbell Workouts
Lux Fit Blog

Whether a barbell or dumbbells are better depends on your fitness goals, preferences, and specific exercises. Barbells are great for heavy compound lifts like squats, deadlifts, bench presses and lunges like I’m doing in the pic! Barbells allow you to lift heavier weights and target multiple muscle groups at the same time. When I’m doing a lunge I’m focusing on engaging my core, glutes and quads. Dumbbells, on the other hand, offer more versatility for unilateral exercises, isolating smaller more specific muscles like biceps during a bicep curl and providing a greater range of motion for cert ..read more

On October 2nd Andy and I fell in love with our baby girl, Sophia! She’s so perfect in every way, we’re still pinching ourselves! Can’t believe she’ll actually be calling me mommy one day. She’s also so amazingly strong for such a tiny little girl. We planned a routine for her arrival and established our roles in this new adventure of ours, both of us have always worked as a team since day 1. We felt ready and anticipating her arrival and given the amount of helpful information heard from friends and family, the best info given was that every baby is different and every parent will find what ..read more

It’s amazing that no matter what season we’re in and what our goals are at the time there is always a nutrition and workout path we can take! Having a program in place helps keeps consistency in reaching those goals. We’re about “9 weeks out” from having a new addition in our family and we’ve already starting brainstorming how our workouts will progress! Especially for me these past couple weeks have been challenging as my belly continues to grow and have had to switch my focus a lot on restorative movement and mobility, walking has also been amazing therapy and cardio. Sometimes finding a pro ..read more

Strength Training in my Second Trimester
Lux Fit Blog

Strength training has always been a part of my workout routine, and since being pregnant I’ve had to make a few adjustments to many of my usual exercises, but making these modifications have been exciting and I feel like I’ve been adding a refreshing twist to how I would usually do things. For example check out the first picture below of me doing a lunge variation: I’m holding the dumbbell in one arm which requires more balance, activation and stabilization from my core and as a bring my back leg forward again, I bring the knee up instead of planting it on the floor next to my other foot whic ..read more

Do we need to lift weights to lose weight? Or is dieting enough?
Lux Fit Blog

When it comes to weight loss, dieting and being in a caloric deficit should be a top priority, and doing that can help you achieve weight loss goals BUT – (you knew there was a but coming) we don’t think it’s optimal to be on a weight loss program and just focus on dieting. Why?  Resistance training increases muscle mass which will also increase your metabolic rate and the higher your metabolic rate is, the more calories you burn and the easier it is to lose weight and keep it off (plus the other numerous benefits resistance training can offer like better posture and getting stronger). I ..read more

Metabolism Matters in Weight Loss Does our metabolism really slow down as we age? We’ve heard some interesting stories and quotes from people about how weight gain becomes inevitable after we hit a certain age. But for the majority it seems that a change in lifestyle affects our metabolism and causes most of our weight gain. What usually affects the speed of our metabolism? Resting Metabolic Rate: How many calories we burn while we rest. Thermic effect of food: How many calories we burn when we eat, through digestion. Exercise: How many calories we burn when we workout. It’s been over a year since the Covid -19  pandemic and since being stuck at home more, many of us are moving less, and snacking more (since snacks are easier and more accessible to get to). Stress also plays a big factor in how much and what we eat (cravings for comfort foods hit us when we’re more emotional) But don’t beat yourself up if you’ve gained weight during the pandemic. Still many of us don’t have access to a gym so changing habits or starting new exercise challenges or new diets can seem super overwhelming. Here are some tips on how to set yourself up for a successful we ..read more

Reasons Why You Need a Structured Fitness Plan
Lux Fit Blog

Having a fitness plan to follow provides structure and goals as well as prevents under or overtraining. Check out our points below. Why not have everything laid out for you and have the guessing work taken out of: how many reps to do, how many workouts a week, what exercises/videos are the most effective for your goals, etc.. there’s nothing worse than feeling like you’re wasting time doing something. Many are just following random workout videos online because they promote something attractive but might not actually be the most suitable for their fitness goals. Having a workout plan provides ..read more
