Anyone up for a biweekly Lets Play Suchandsuch Scrolling Brawler?   I was thinking along the lines of:   2D, so no God Hand Retro, so no Shredder’s Revenge, SoR4 etc Not talked about so much, so no Final Fight, Streets of Rage etc   Run along the lines of the Retro Game Club threads but just for brawlers, and perhaps we could keep it to one thread with a title update when we get a new game. I love the old can’t-go-left brawlers and there must be more people on here who want to talk about the also-rans and the good-but-forgotten ones.   Anyone up for it?   So far we ha ..read more

Games set underwater

Does anyone else like playing games set underwater? I've always enjoyed In The Hunt, but I'm largely talking about aquatic-based adventures like the Ecco The Dolphin games, Everblue, Aquanaut's Holiday, Treasures Of The Deep and Endless Ocean? Aside from Treasures Of The Deep which is a tremendously solid action-based FPS, the others are delightful to play when you fancy a little downtime. I'm currently playing through Aquanaut's Holiday: Hidden Memories on PS3 and am having a lovely time discovering long-lost wrecks and cataloguing all manner of underwater creatures. What are your favourite g ..read more

Wii U Appreciation Thread

It feels wrong that it's me starting this thread up, given I'm hardly the biggest Nintendo fan on the forum, but there we go! Given the 3DS has had its own thread for a few years now, it only feels fair that its stablemate gets given the treatment.     The design was always a bit odd - the very lightweight and plasticky GamePad coupled with a rounded off Wii as a base console managed to be both unusual yet unexciting at the same time, and said GamePad being front and centre would remain a rod for the console's back throughout its lifetime: barely used by most games, it was seen as a ..read more

How future proof are current and recent consoles?

Asking for some expert advice here.   I discovered way too late that practically all GBC and most GBA games have internal batteries that eventually die, and if you're no good at soldering, making them useless in the process. PS3 has the dreaded CMOS weakness (which Sony thankfully removed for the PS4), making the console useless as well when the battery dies. So, except for regular wear and tear (disc drives dying; thermal paste drying up etc.) consoles like the NDS, 3DS, WiiU, PS4 and Switch seem to be built to last longer than the aforementioned consoles.   Any other consoles and p ..read more

The Gameboy appreciation thread is mostly about screens nowadays. Which is fine, but I thought we could have a gameplay thread for fans of the mighty monochrome handheld.    I had in mind its running along the same lines as the brawlers thread. Someone nominates a game, then nominates someone else when a couple of weeks passes.   We don’t have to do outstanding games - I’d be delighted to get back into Golf, Tennis and other playable but less memorable titles.   If you’re interested, post, and if we get a group of people we can get the ball rolling.   Shadow Warriors&n ..read more
