Getting Started Getting started at the gym can seem like a daunting task. You tell yourself each week that come Monday, you’ll be ready, and you will suddenly have the motivation to start fresh. But, that magic Monday never seems to come. There’s always going to be an excuse not to go. I’ve been there. I used to dread coming to the gym. If even the tiniest inconvenience popped up and gave me a reason to put it off another day, I would give in. I realize now that the more I put it off, the bigger the problem grew in my head. Each time I did show up it seemed just as difficult as the last. This ..read more

Early Challenges My health journey has been a long road, full of ups and downs and learning curves.  When I was young I hated exercise, so much so that I faked multiple sprained ankles or stomach bugs throughout my school years, specifically on the days I discovered we had to run cross country. My hatred for exercise stemmed from not being very good at it. I wasn’t naturally gifted with the genetics of an athlete, nor was I raised in an environment where sport or fitness was encouraged. My early childhood was focused primarily on the needs of my disabled mother, who suffered from Multipl ..read more

Day 1 - John Leslie WCAC Personal Trainer I love creating workouts that prepare people for the physical challenges of every day life. My functional workouts come from spending 11 years on a Canadian National team. I had to learn not only how to get in shape but how to sustain my fitness over a competition schedule. When I first got my personal trainers certificate I wasn’t too sure how my past skills were going to help people with their fitness goals. It took getting into the “deep end” with in person training along with virtual. I was forced into positions where I was able to learn. That ..read more

Day 1 - Michelle Elliott WNBF Canada Bikini Pro My story My first show was in May 2019, and I’d be lying if I said it was easy. When I was first introduced to this fitness industry, I was intrigued and ready for the challenge of taking my training and nutrition to the next level. I turned motivation into discipline, but at the same time, a lot of tears and sweat were shed in the process leading up to my first competition. Being in a calorie deficit to lose body fat and still training hard at the gym was pretty tough, but at the time I found saying no certain social events the toughest. I had t ..read more

So what is all the controversy about? I believe that the most important factor in lifestyle change when it comes to weight loss and better health is normalising a positive relationship with food.  There is plenty controversy around whether we should incorporate ‘cheat days’ into our diets, with one side of the argument proposing they may help us to stick to our regimented diets throughout the week, and with others debating they may lead to spirals in bad behaviour and an excessive increase in caloric intake on certain days of the week.  It’s important to be aware of the difference b ..read more

Alex’s story Since I can remember I have always been good at sport and I love Swimming. Being sporty has always come naturally and I swam 5-8 times weekly growing up with both my parents being swim coaches. Our entire family would go swimming every night. At a young age I was diagnosed with Dyslexia and I found reading and math very difficult. School became more unenjoyable the older I got being put into the lowest tier classes meaning the kids were more disruptive.  Despite my dyslexia, I was extremely hard working. Maybe I learnt this from training so hard in the pool. Almost every sub ..read more
