M8.1 quake Kermadec Islands: Tsunami watches
Earthwaves.org

There was a M8.1 thrust quake just now north of New Zealand near Kermadec Islands. It generated a tsunami and I think there is a tsunami watch for Hawaii. It is an interesting sequence because it has a M7.4 foreshock 107 minutes ahead. Plus there was a M7.3 6 hours before 900 km to the south, off of NE New Zealand.  Chris https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/.../executive https://www.tsunami.gov/events/PHEB/2021...WEHW40.txt ..read more

Software

[EDIT - Download link removed. It's just prototype software and posted in order to share with an individual for testing. I'll leave the manual up in case anyone is interested. Development continues and info about availability will be posted here.] This is some software I have written to help access and download event data from the USGS servers, since their interface is now web based and limits output to 20k records max. However, the database contains over 3.6 million events, so if you need larger chunks of the catalog, it's hard to grab it easily. This software is 'as is' and no warranty is ..read more

Where is everybody, and stay safe

Dear All, Maybe I will start posting a little bit but if there are no other posts I will not post much. Everyone stay safe! I've been thinking that when I and others used to post a lot here, it sort of kept me company. I've been living by myself for the last 4 1/2 years, and lots of changes in my life. Maybe I post about some of them.  I've started taken coronavirus seriously for the last 10 days and have learned to limit exposure. All on campus research is shut down at UCSB but I work from home anyway, across the country from UCSB.  Best Chris ..read more

Ash Hills fault

As I alluded in my post re the 7.1 quake, there is a cluster of quakes stretching east of the main aftershocks, with a bit of clustering on the Ash Hills fault. Below is a map of the quakes from the USGS with largest listed first (and on top). I've also highlighted the Ash Hills fault (highlighted in green). In doing a quick google for info on this fault, I found a recent (2016) study on the SCEC website. Late Holocene rupture history of the Ash Hill fault, Eastern California Shear Zone Quote:At one site, a single continuous surface rupture laterally displaces three generations of alluvium ..read more

4th of july Ridgecrest quake

Hello everyone!!! I felt today's 6.4 quake while at work. I was sitting and it was just long rolling motions, not hard. But I made a fairly good guess as to size and distance. i had guess at least a 6 and about 100 miles away. I've felt enough quakes now to have a feel for what their motions are like from various distances. Anyway, hope everyone is doing well and has a wonderful 4th of July holiday. Sorry I've not been around much. Brian ..read more
