Good evening folks, Thank you for all the input thus far, there is much to consider but the remaining three moderators cannot make these decisions alone. This whole subject has been running hot and the mod team need a rest and reset, it's exhausting! Most of the remaining team are off on holiday meaning the forum does not have sufficient cover both for Admin and moderating. As such from 11pm tonight the site will be placed in maintenance mode where it can be viewed but no posts/threads... Read more ..read more

DOOA Terra Base outside of a tank? Extra Hygrolon layer?
UK Aquatic Plant Society

I like the the Terra Base series but it's a bit fiddly. You more or less need a tank – get one that's too small and it steams up or goes mouldy, too big and you might as well get a real tank going. I was trying to think how to fix this. Remembered using Hygrolon (wicking 3D mesh that people love using for terrarium walls) on a DOA Terra Plate (orchid mounting) to add some extra wicking. I was thinking whether it's feasible to make a hygrolon mesh and use it as a sock over the Dooa Base... Read more ..read more

An ongoing distraction...
UK Aquatic Plant Society

I have begun a big distraction/project and it seems like a journal dedicated to it might a good thing. A while back my delightfully amenable husband said that if I tidied out and and emptied two cupboards in the living room, we could put a big tank in there. So I did. And I got a 250l tank and stand from a bloke of Facebook, as you do. The tank was too low -- I was worried my daughter's wheelchair would bash it -- so we chocked it up on breeze blocks. Then @ian_m pointed out that... Read more ..read more

Hi all, I think I might have some cyanobacteria in my paludarium. It has appeared only in a small branch and has found its way upwards. I might have brought it with some aquasoil I used to plant some Bucephalandra. I pretty sure this is cyanobacteria never had anything like that in my tanks before. Any ideas on how to kill it ..read more

Aqua Marin Planta 900 cabinet - any good?
UK Aquatic Plant Society
by Jack B

Hi everyone, My TMC Signature cabinet is starting to show signs of soaking up water, much like Julian found, back in the day. We're about to move house, so this is a convenient time to make the swap to a new one. I run a sump, and need a cabinet 90cm wide by 45/50cm deep. I don't have capacity to make my own right now, so am looking at buying the cabinet that comes with this setup. It's literally the only suitable one I can find; all others have a dividing wall. Aqua Marin Planta... Read more ..read more

Leaving a new tank for 8 days
UK Aquatic Plant Society
by Anomander

Hello all, I have a low-tech 60l tank that has been set up for 17 days. It has Salvinia Auriculata and Water Sprite covering about 2/3 of the surface, with Anubias and Java Fern attached to driftwood (I have an inert substrate). I've currently been running 6 hours of light a day, and I've been dosing half the weekly recommended dose of TNC Complete (split into two 1/4 doses on two separate days) as well as about a gram of Epsom Salts and 0.5 ml of TNC IronAT. I've been doing 50% water... Read more ..read more
