In April 1911, a Royal Engineers air battalion was founded at Larkhill in Wiltshire. The battalion was composed of companies with airplanes, airships, balloons, and man-carrying kites. The Royal Navy established the Royal Naval Flying School at Eastchurch, Kent, in December 1911.
