The mpox case surge in Africa has been declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) by the WHO. A new clade of the virus has emerged since the 2022 outbreak which has led to a rapid increase in cases. The first module of the UK's COVID-19 enquiry was published in July 2024.
