Have phones ended walkie-talkies on farm?

Our walkie-talkies are acting up. I've looked into replacing them with a few Relay devices, but really, I don't see the point. Everyone seems to have a cell phone, so it's easy to keep in communication while out and about on the farm. Have cell phones made walkie-talkies obsolete on the farm or do some folks still use them? Is there any advantage ..read more

I have to say that I am not impressed right now. This morning our Milwaukee hammer drill quit working. We bought it a little less than a year ago. Granted it only cost us around $280. This is the third Milwaukee tool to just stop working in the last year! I'm headed to our local parts store to send it back for warranty. They charge us 8 bucks each time. I won't be buying any new Milwaukee tools in the near future ..read more

Automation systems

The pandemic made me realize just how quickly my workforce could be here one day and gone the next. Even though I'm not running a large operation, I still can't do it all alone. I've been skeptical in the past, but I think it's time for me to look into automation. So if you've incorporated automation into your livestock care or into your cultivation practices I'd like to hear about it. I'm not sure where to start ..read more

I've tried using a regular compost bin, but haven't had much luck it. I'm considering making the switch to a different system like vericomposting. Is there a good commercial set up available? I'd like to build one from scratch, but I'm not sure that I can find the materials ..read more

Dust diverter

I have considered mounting an old leaf blower up there and driving it off of the feeder chain drive. Might not be pretty but would still pass enough cfm to work. All the dust is coming back on the upper side anyhow so just cut a hole in the front of the feeder and duct it to the blower with the exhaust to the side. Might have to open the exhaust port of the fan up some since they are made for high speed air movement and now we want to get high cfm ..read more

Drill with rechargeable battery

I've had my original Craftsman drill for over 15-years now, but they no longer make the batteries, so I'm going to have to move on. I've already tried another Craftsman, and it was a big disappointment. I've tried a Black and Decker and the battery on it is laughable. Please let me know if you've found a strong drill with a rechargeable battery that lasts ..read more

Old tractors

I can't tell you how many older tractors I see sitting idle in fields. It's sad really. It's almost like old farms (abandoned) and the new owners or children of the old farmers just letting the tractors rust! I've stopped at a few places to see if I could buy a couple. No one sells them ..read more

Just a reminder 1st Rotary Combine Patent

I've got an old JD book and it states in it that they (meaning Deere) has had a rotor combine testing in the field since the 1940s. It was that they never came up with a rotor combine that they thought was suitable enough until the STS. I was at a dealer combine clinic on the STSs before I even thought about one, and the rep from Deere that was on the STS project said that the best design for shelling corn they had did All of the separation right on the CORN HEAD! Can you imagine. He... Read more ..read more
