Interesting! Check to see if you have heavy metal fouling....a .308 or .309 cast bullet would work well. Cool find! I had given the barrel a major swab and scrub treatment and it was as clean as possible. I had it at the range today with the rounds I had loaded. Nothing cast to load as of yet. My formula was this, new Hornady brass, Federal 210 primers, 41.3gr IMR 4350 topped with a Hornady 180gr Spitzer. Advertised velocity is 2100fps which is the standard 30 Army ball velocity. Now that I've actually shot it I will do a 24 hour bore soak using a home made chamber plug. That will indeed o ..read more

Nice Krag! Krags are wonderful shooters. Mine does exceedingly well with cast bullets. Mine likes the Lyman 314299 sized to .313. I didn't want to respond to your post until I had a chance to slug my bore and answer correctly. So I've had the chance to slug it and what I discovered shocked me. I've read about very oversized bores on these rifles but that's not what I discovered with mine. The barrel specs out as .304" diameter in the grooves and .286 across the lands. Usually tight for a 30 caliber for sure and especially tight for a 119 year old one. Use of .313 diameter bullets could be c ..read more

I'll be out of town for the next four days so this is the last post for a while. Monument Rocks (also Chalk Pyramids) are a series of large chalk formations in Gove County, Kansas, rich in fossils. The formations were the first landmark in Kansas chosen by the US Department of the Interior as a National Natural Landmark. The chalk formations reach a height of up to 70 ft and include formations such as buttes and arches. The carbonate deposits were laid down during the Cretaceous Period in what was then the Western Interior Seaway, which split the continent of North America into two landmasses ..read more

Badwater Basin is an endorheic basin in Death Valley National Park, Death Valley, Inyo County, California, noted as the lowest point in North America and the United States, with a depth of 282 ft below sea level. Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous 48 United States, is only 84.6 miles (136 km) to the northwest. The site itself consists of a small spring-fed pool of "bad water" next to the road in a sink; the accumulated salts of the surrounding basin make it undrinkable, thus giving it the name. The pool does have animal and plant life, including pickleweed, aquatic insects, an ..read more
