1988 Brompton servicing - play in pedal crank

The sun is out, so it's time to play with my new (v. old!) toys... I've flushed the hub out with GT85 and dripped a little oil in, as was suggested in the other thread. The cables seemed OK, so I squirted PTFE lubricant down them and this has all resulted in a much nicer gearchange. However, I have about 2mm sideways play in the rear wheel... unbelievably I can still recall adjusting the bearings on the Raleigh Chopper I had as a yoof and this looks similar so I'm thinking I'll be OK with... Brompton spoke length discrepancy
Cyclechat - Folding Bikes

Noticed a broken spoke in my Brompton SON front wheel, removed it and hunted out my couple of spare spokes, bought shortly after buying the bike in 2009. Right length but too thick to go through the hole. Dammit! Look online for a suitable spoke, 148mm, 14g instead of the 13g of my spare. What? Brompton's own datasheet and spares suppliers such as SJS and Brilliant Bikes, indicate 137mm!? How can this be? Measure and remeasure. Definitely 148mm. Look again at Bromptons chart. Ah... 1988 Brompton Model L - how do the gears work?
Cyclechat - Folding Bikes

Hi, I've just bought two very old Brompton folding bikes, which are fitted with what look like the old Sturmey Archer gears the Raleigh Chopper I had as a kid had (the little chain thing going into the hub). Thing is, there's one on each side of the hub, so my question is how do the different ratios work? Thanks ..read more

Brompton BWR hub maintenance

As per my post in the thread dedicated to my own example, pulling the indicator chain from the hub revealed some decidedly grey and manky looking oil on its end. This led to thoughts of cleaning out the existing lubricant now it's run in (and the lube will be contaminated with all the resultant particulates) and re-lubing. While not the same, Shimano apparently suggest an oil change on their 11sp Alfine hub at 1k km, then subsequently every 5k km or two years. Information for the... Read more ..read more

Anyone here with a Tern Joe?

HI All, I have a Tern Joe P27 but have issues with the amount of movement around the main hinge bolt. It's been into Evans many times, but they tend to be pretty useless. It looks to me as if something should screw in to the top of the bolt to secure it and reduce the amount of play in the bolt socket, but I can't find another Joe to look at. If anyone here does have one- have you got something on top of the bolt below the grommet ..read more

Will need some replacements sooner or later and might as well keep an eye out for any bargain while the current ones last. So... what are people using? Are we seeing any difference between different brands / cheap and expensive in terms of stopping ability, modulation, rim and pad wear etc..? Irritatingly just missed out on some dirt-cheap Lifeline items on CRC, having decisively placed an order ..read more

Looking to see if any other Brompton owners can help with any child seat experience/advice. We are going to be cycling the little one to nursery soon. Its a grand distance of 0.9 miles miles. I was thinking of getting one to front mount, low on the handle bar. Keen to hear anyone else experience/views on the best options or one that worked well for them. Thanks Ben ..read more

Old Folder to identify, please.

Mornin' Good Folk. Can anyone help me identify this wee velo that came my way the other day, please, purely out of curiosity? Having rummaged about on t'internet it appears to be a sixties generic frame, badged up in this instance with an "S" on the head tube. It's been well maintained and all works ok except for the need of a toggle chain for the hub. Thanks in advance. If my old Mum (91yo and missing her cycling days!) doesn't feel she can stay upright on two wheels any more then it will... Read more ..read more

Does Brompton Borough come with cover?
Cyclechat - Folding Bikes

As per title. It's not waterproof so I'd need a cover with it. Do I need to buy the cover separately or does it come with the bag? Reason I need a larger, commuting replacement for work supplied laptop rucksack that's 16litres. I have an alpkit Gourdon 30 litres rucksack but I want to put the load on the bag. I have to carry ppe for work including a hard hat. I struggle with everything and end up cycling with my hard hat on. With the Borough I can carry the hat on the outside with other...
