From left: Peter Morgan, Des Yardley, Graeme and Bruce Hobbs. Looks like 13 sea-run salmon and a brace of sea-run brown trout caught in Canterbury’s mighty Rakaia River back in 1977. Total weight 220-pounds. Take away the two trout and the average weight of the salmon would be around 16-pounds each, notwithstanding there are four or five bigger fish displayed. Over the years the daily bag limit was reduced from 6 down to 4, then from 4 down to 2, and then starting last year for the 2021/2022 season, a whole season bag limit of just 2 sea-run salmon was introduced for the first time ever in Ne ..read more

Years of work and a law change help pull dwindling salmon population back from the brink A salmon at Manuka Point in the Rakaia’s upper reaches. In the icy upper reaches of the Rakaia River, Fish and Game officers watch their efforts pay dividends from the sky. Last year, the agency brandished the only weapon in its arsenal to turn around dwindling salmon numbers, and aerial counts in the high-country headwaters of Canterbury’s braided rivers show it could be working. Fish & Game introduced a bag limit of two sea-run salmon per angler in Canterbury and North Otago for the first time this s ..read more

I knew it I pulled too hard the fish would be history,” Kole said. It took him 35 minutes to coax the salmon into a groyne – a rock wall built by the Marlborough D ..read more
