Will there be enough electricity available to transition to electric vehicles (EVs)?

Will renewable electricity generation methods be able to scale to cover the increase in electricity consumption resulting from a transition to EVs? What surprised me the most is from the eia.gov link. It shows that the total electricity production in the U.S. has remained mostly constant from 2007 until 2022. I though the increasing popularity of EVs would make it higher. Higher energy costs, and new technologies like LED lighting must have caused people to use less electricity, making more available for EVs. As of 2022 renewable energy sources account for 15.2% of electricity production, excl ..read more

The US gas guzzler tax! While I was distracted learning about CAFE

While I was distracted learning about CAFE and track width and wheel base and the minimum fuel economy required to not be fined based on those things this gas guzzler tax was going on for decades.! Currently vehicle makers have to pay $1000 to $7700 per vehicle sold if it qualifies as a gas guzzler, and this tax has been going on since 1977. As you might have guessed, it only applies to cars and larger or taller vehicles are exempt. No wonder they push the sales of trucks and vans and they got rid of the large traditional cars. It’s not just CAFE that is to blame. Unadjusted MPG (combined ..read more

Chevron announced recently that they plan to buy Hess in a friendly transaction. This will give them greater cash reserves, which they plan to use to buy back more shares. If approved, Chevron will allot $20 billion to stock share buybacks instead of the current $17.5 billion annually. No, they won’t decrease your price at the pump. As you may know, Hess gas stations are owned by Marathon and won’t be affected in this transaction. 2018 Ford edge significant fuel efficiency loss after Flex plate repair and maintenance

Need help troubleshooting why my vehicle has lost fuel efficiency! I drive a 2018 Ford Edge for work. We received a ‘dealer customer service’ report stating that there could be an issue with the Flex Plate. The vehicle was already outside the mileage window for Ford to help with any of the cost, however the dealership did an inspection and told us it was in fact cracked and recommended replacement along with tune up and other ‘scheduled maintenance’ due to the mileage (127K at the time). Due to costs we went to a local auto mechanic vs dealership for the repair. They replaced the Flex plate (d ..read more

How much boost is too much boost?

Hi, I’m a little bit newer on the car scene in the sense that my current car, a 1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS, is my first project car to really modify. I’ve been in and around cars and modifications for years, but no one’s ever really explained the process of figuring out how much/to boost a (for all intents and purposes, stock) engine. How do you know where to start with numbers on pressure and horsepower increases? How do I know whether or not while my crank and connecting rods might be fine, maybe the engine spools too much and runs at much too high RPMs? edit: the motor in my Eclipse is a NA ..read more

Remove water from alcohol for fuel

Ive been trying to do some research about adding these water removers (stp water remover) to alcohol (65-80%) and have been coming up empty handed, and dont want to test it outright off the bat without some input first as it is drinkable alcohol, so the main question is, would it “remover” more of the water that is present in the alcohol and settle it out as a separate layer? I was then also going to add fuel conditioner to bring up the lubrication of the ethanol before mixing it with gasoline. I hope this isnt confusing 7 posts - 6 participants Read full topic ..read more

Multimeter is not reading amps

I’m attempting to diagnose a parasitic battery drain on my car. First time doing it. I looked at YouTube videos, and it seemed pretty straightforward. edit: vehicle is a 2000 GMC Jimmy edit: multimeter is an AMES DM1000. It’s labeled as an “Electrician/HVAC TRMS Digital Multimeter.” Is the problem that it’s not an “automotive” multimeter (I realize this is probably a dumb question)? This is a new battery (only a couple days old since my last one died due to the battery drain ). I tried this 2 times–once when I got back from errands (edit: so the battery was charged at this point), and once whe ..read more

Roll Starting if Fuel Is the Issue
Car Talk Community - Power/Fuel

Newbie here. Can you roll start a car that seems to have fuel problems. I can’t start my car. The battery is OK, also have an external source. The starter is cranking the engine. It sounds like the fuel pump is getting juice. But the engine won’t turn over. Altho my latest attempt it sounded like it was trying. I’m guessing, though, that roll-starting the engine won’t work. 3 posts - 3 participants Read full topic ..read more
