Every detail matters.  All artists know this, and it’s especially true when you’re trying to bring that sense of realism to a piece. Artist Hannah Lemon strives to capture every little detail in the miniatures she makes.  During lockdown, Hannah’s fascination with houseplants grew. No matter what was going on in her life, they all continued to bloom or wilt or change regardless, and she found this comforting. “They just have their own world, don't care about what's happening in the human world.” She makes the effort to capture every tiny detail of the plants she recreates - includ ..read more

Most artists tend to view their work as something everlasting, something permanent. But Lucy Schmidt, a UK born muralist based in Berlin, acknowledges that her art, much like nature, is ephemeral. Ever since she was a child, she’s had an interest in art over anything else. “My parents said I was not so interested in dolls or anything like that. I just wanted a pen and a coloring book.” Berlin has endless seeds of inspiration for Lucy’s art. “My works tend to take some time because I'm stopping every 10 seconds to take photos or I'm sending a voice message and I have to say, “‘Wait one second ..read more

For those who have never traveled to the southwest, it can be a total shock to the senses. For Contemporary Abstract Artist Heather Bentz, it was a wake-up call and a muse for her artwork. “This is the first time I’ve lived in the desert. I’ve lived in a lot of different places, but the desert is extreme and surprising in many ways.” She describes how the colors at first were so surprising to her, the vibrant desert landscape palette and unique shapes of the plants have been highly impactful in her art. In fact, the desert reminds her of a beloved author who also had a penchant for peculiar ..read more

Another year, another Film Festival! We had such a special opportunity this year to bring our show on the road and travel to Tucson, Arizona. Our filmmakers and judges came with us so we could give them all the appreciation they deserve for working so hard for us. Thank you so much to our judges this year: Vic Frailing, Rueben Huffman, Jacob Bricca, and Cheryl Koury. All of their comments help us know how to improve so we can be the best PlantPop possible and getting to spend time with them in person was so valuable for us. Without further ado, here’s the winners of the Fifth Annual PlantPop ..read more

Keeping a family business alive and thriving is hard work. It requires a person who’s both dedicated to their work and upholding that legacy. Lisa Fields is one of those hard workers, striving to keep Grant’s Farm going as long as she can.  “The one thing that I will do is I will keep this going. I have to keep my parents name going and what they have done and what they have built.” Lisa’s father fell in love with the plants he’d see in the gardens of Miami, and he became inspired to start a flowering tree farm. The tree business took a huge hit when a fungus began wiping them out, so th ..read more

Seattle based artist Victoria had a lot of mixed emotions about selling her artwork, both excited and nervous about putting herself and her art out into the world. Then, once people started buying her art and posting photos of it in their homes, she felt it was all worth it.  “It does inspire me to want to do more for them. And because my work is reaching people, and it's touching people in some, some way, so I want to continue that.” As she was taking care of her house plants, Victoria’s love and appreciation for nature grew and she  started to notice that her work was becoming fil ..read more

Coming from a public art teaching background, muralist Jaz Erenberg spends a lot of her time considering how the community is impacted by her work and how they can impact it in return. She sources ideas for new pieces from the Baltimore locals, engaging them in the process. “When they get to see their story, their reflection, on such a public stage, and they know that they’ve been part of it from the beginning, the whole behavior of the neighborhood changes.”  Jaz believes that bringing people in to help bring her art to these public spaces is a great way to bridge social gaps throughout ..read more
