Plant of the Episode Schizachyrium scoparium Little blue stem, which is so much easier to pronounce than the above botanical name, is one of my favorite ornamental grasses. I am a sucker for that glaucous blue. This one is ‘Blue Heaven’. Photo from Hoffman Nursery, . It’s a native, which makes me feel smug, but it is such a good looking and interesting plant. I could not resist this half price beauty. and would happily have paid the $5 for something scruffier. This new-to-me cultivar is called Smoke Signal, and though it looks almost red in the photo below, it was the purple-y smokey color th ..read more

That I have not blogged for the last few episodes. Sorry! I am a bit distracted by the moving thing. If you would like to see more blog posts, could you please give this little ditty a “like” or even leave a message. Sometimes I think the blog posts/show notes are not widely read, and perhaps I had better spend that time in the garden?? I would love to know what you think. Thanks ..read more

Marianne looking charming and ready for travel. Scott looking like Scott. Here you have two people who always make me laugh. Marianne Willburn and Scott Beuelein can be serious about gardening but both enjoy the vagaries and challenges and FUN that it provides. Plus, they are excellent writers who make me think and who amuse me, not always in that order. Below are the various things we covered in our podcast conversation that you need to link to… ~GardenRant.com (Where you not only get these two, but LOTS of other great writing.) ~The Dear Gardener Series on GardenRant.com ~CAST, or the C ..read more

Kevin and Dragan work a 27 acre farm in King George, Virginia. The flower bar! Ready made bouquets. Kevin Graham and Dragan Kurbalija both grew up in the great outdoors, sort of. Kevin’s ‘mandatory fun’ was pitching in with his father’s landscaping company. Afterword, his siblings and he swore they would never own a plant that needed tending. Dragan grew up on a farm, but did not set out to be a farmer. These two gentlemen are not just casual about their pursuit— this is a full scale operation, with eggs, broiler chickens, produce, and of course, flowers. American Roots with Nick McCullough

Nick McCullough, his wife Allison, and Teresa Woodland have written a book that celebrates American gardens and their creators. This entertaining book explores gardens from all over the country. It’s very difficult to identify and label the quintessential American Garden, but the McCulloughs discovered that each garden was a reflection of its gardener. Nick travelled the country and interviewed all kinds of people, including one of my FAVORITE gardeners, @TheImpatientGardener, Erin Schanen! It’s a beautiful book, full of inspiration. Doug Tallamy and Zizia aurea, 94

Plant of the Week: Zizia aurea, or Golden alexander Here’s the plant that I was going to have as Plant of the Week. But Digitalis purpurea is not a native, and that didn’t feel right for a Doug Tallamy episode. This photo serves double duty— it shows some of my daffodil foliage that is not ready to say good-bye. Zizea aurea is our first time repeat Plant of the Week. Way back in episode 50 I chose it for the first time, as it was a new plant for me, and a native that I wanted to try. I have it growing in fairly deep shade, but it’s blooming nicely now in May. My plan is to divide it and move ..read more
