Our girl Gigi has found a home! Back in February, we featured Gigi for Valentine’s Day so we could find her the love of her life. She was such a friendly and easy-going dog, and we were determined to find her a family. We’re happy to announce that last month, a wonderful couple adopted Gigi, and she is already settling right in, going for walks and napping on their couch.  Gigi had come to us after being found as a stray by Hamilton Animal Services. No one claimed her, and she eventually made her way to us so we could help find her a home. With her love for people, Gigi immediately became ..read more

Things to consider when bringing your pet along during patio season Warm weather is around the corner, and that can mean only one thing. Patio season is almost upon us! We certainly can’t be the only ones who want to capitalize on time spent with our pets in good weather. When the patios open, so does the possibility of bringing our pets to dine and drink with us. Here are a few things to consider before you bring your pet with you this spring: Are you sure it’s pet-friendly? It’s easy to assume an outdoor location allows pets, but for many health and safety reasons, they may not. Even if you ..read more

Meet Gus, 13 years old Gus is a mature gentleman who has plenty of love left to give. He may be the strong, silent type at first but he quickly reveals his nature as a real cuddlebug, never passing up on an opportunity to snuggle with his family. On a regular day, you’ll catch him napping, begging for chin scratches, and wrapping himself around his people. He’s recently become a bit of a “health nut” to shed a few pounds, and he seems to be enjoying his new active lifestyle. Gus has had some previous negative experiences that made him tentative about other animals or small children. So, his b ..read more

Difficult days and bright sides At the end of February, we worked with Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAW) in Chatham-Kent to take in some of their incoming pets in what turned out to be a bittersweet turn of events. They expected to receive a litter of six puppies. And despite their best efforts, they did not have room for the pups, so we stepped in to take them. We made room in the shelter, prepped our resources and made arrangements for their transport to us. Ready to take the puppies into our care, we were disappointed to hear the puppies were instead sold for profit by the owners. The sad reali ..read more

Become a monthly EHS donor We want to go steady with you! As an organization that relies entirely on fundraising and donations, we’re looking for supporters who are ready to commit to a relationship – by becoming a monthly donor. Monthly donations are an important source of funding for EHS, as it’s predictable and allows us to plan for our expenses. Our largest cost each month is vet bills as we ensure our animals receive high-quality care so they can be ready to find their forever families. This includes Oliver, a young friendly cat discovered trapped in an apartment closet after being left b ..read more

Meet Max, 3 years old Max is a Husky mix who travelled to EHS from a northern community near Nunavut. He lives in a foster home with another large breed dog, and his fosters have learned plenty about him. Like many Huskies, Max loves to spend time outdoors and with his people and is a big fan of routine. He will settle at your feet for scratches behind the ears, but if it's time for a walk, he will beat you to the door. Max has mastered many skills, including paw, down, place and following his nose to the kitchen. The way to his heart is definitely through his stomach. Max is picking up comma ..read more

Thinking About How To Protect Your Pets As we’re in the thick of winter, it’s a good idea to think about how to protect your pets as the temperature drops. Most pet owners know they should not leave a pet in the cold for extended periods. Certain factors (breed, age, weight, medical conditions, etc.) may influence the length of time they’re okay to be in the cold, but they all have a limit. It’s simple to determine when your pet has reached theirs. Just be sure to look for signs of discomfort (lifting feet, shivering, frequent stops, etc.). Aside from watching for these signs, there are other ..read more

Every Animal Deserves A Second Chance Change a Pet’s Life Day is celebrated annually on January 24th, a day to support and encourage the adoption of animals. The day is increasingly important from a shelter perspective. Here are some ways you can make a difference in a pet's life this year: 1.    Adopt a Pet Of course, the ideal way to support the day from our perspective is to adopt a pet. Realistically, this may not be the best option for everyone. However, if you are in the market for a pet, consider heading to your local shelter to meet some animals up for adoption. 2.  ..read more
