2024 PaddlingLight Update
PaddlingLight
by Bryan Hansel

It’s 2024 and PaddlingLight is still kicking away. It’s been 20 years of blogging about paddling on PaddlingLight and before that Nessmuking and before that on a different website. It’s hard to believe, but this is one of the longest lasting blogs about paddling on the internet. I’m almost a grey beard now, so I should get really good at rolling my sea kayak soon. Anyway, I have thoughts… Blogging over Marketing As I’ve expressed before, I think that social media ended up wrecking the golden age of blogging. There used to be a bunch of different paddling blogs bouncing ideas off of each other ..read more

LaCrosse Grange Boots Review: Best Boot for Canoeing?
PaddlingLight
by Bryan Hansel

For the last couple of years, I’ve been using the LaCrosse Grange Boots for canoeing when I want a rubber waterproof boot. If you’re a long-time reader, you may remember that back in 2019 I wrote The Best Boots for Canoeing. I recommend the Xtratufs boots, and I still think that’s a good recommendation. But I found that after a couple of trips that they didn’t fit my feet well. I sold them and then bought a pair of LaCrosse Grange Boots. To make this review short, these are the boots that I’ve been using for canoeing, shoulder seasons around town, when going into wet areas for photography, and ..read more

Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 Review: Lightweight Tent for Paddlers
PaddlingLight
by Bryan Hansel
1M ago
I’ve mentioned the Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL2 in prior posts and then realized that I hadn’t reviewed it, yet. Considering it has been my primary tent for solo adventures over the last few years, I need to sing a little praise for the tent. What is it? The Tiger Wall UL2 is a lightweight tent for canoeing, kayaking and backpacking. It’s a popular tent with backpackers looking to shed weight, and I think it’s a tent that paddlers should consider. In this review, I’ll cover the product’s specs, the performance, a few pros and cons, and my experience with the tent. I hope this review will help you ..read more

Yama Mountain Gear Cirriform Tarp Review
PaddlingLight
by Bryan Hansel

Last year I picked up a couple of Yama Mountain Gear products. The first was a DCF 7’/5′ x 9′ Tapered Tarp and the second was the 1P Cirriform Tarp in SilPoly and the third was a Y-Zip Bug Bivy. I also bought their DCF Stake Bag and repair patches. I like tarps and wanted to try a shaped tarp to see how I would like it. I really like the DCF 7’/5′ x 9′ Tapered Tarp. I was going to review it, but they don’t make it anymore. I paid $125 for the bug bivy and $210 for the 1P Cirriform Tarp. I also picked up the aluminum poles for $36.95. I ended up liking their rigging system, so I purchased guyli ..read more

Canoe and Kayak Building Resources

Paddlinglight.com began as a place to distribute my wilderness philosophy, show off my kayak and canoe building logs, provide boat information, and get my free canoe and kayak plans online. Since it’s inception, Paddlinglight.com grew far bigger than I expected, and the most popular articles on the site have consistently been about boat building. For new visitors there are a daunting number of articles on canoe and kayak building, so this post is written with you in mind. Builders and paddlers who’ve visited before may find many of these resources new and interesting as well. If you have an id ..read more

Telling a Good Canoe and Kayak Adventure Story
PaddlingLight
by Bryan Hansel

Years ago, I took time to analyze the story structure of different types of canoe and kayak adventures that were published in various magazines. I wanted to be able to pitch the types of stories that the editors were buying, and I wanted to be able to do it in the formats they were accepting. I ended up identify three different types of stories: Trip Reports, Autobiographical Trip Reports Focusing on a Global Issue, and a Biography. There were more types of stories, but these three were the most interesting to me. I outlined each of the different scenes that were used to tell the story. I’ve u ..read more

Borah Gear Ultralight Bivy Review
PaddlingLight
by Bryan Hansel

The Borah Gear Ultralight Bivy is a lightweight sack to put your sleeping bag, sleeping pad and self into while you sleep. How else do you describe a bivy? It’s designed to shelter you, protect you from splashes and drafts and add a little warmth to your sleeping bag. It also has bug netting above your face to help you breath and keep the bugs out. I bought it to provide a little extra protection when sleeping under a small tarp. I used this in 2023 on a ten-day bikepacking trip, and I would call this a limited review. That said, I probably won’t be using it often due to the limitations and I ..read more

Sanborn Canoe’s New Minnesota State Flag Paddle
PaddlingLight
by Bryan Hansel

If you haven’t heard, Minnesota recently finished the process of redesigning its state flag. The old flag was of the “state seal on a bedsheet” type. It also redesigned the state seal — and decided on an epic canoe country inspired design. THE BEST STATE SEAL IN THE NATION. You can learn about the redesign at the Minnesota Historical Society’s website. Even though some polls might say that the new state flag looks like “Sky Camouflage,” the new flag looks great when put on merch. I expect this will become a profitable market to be in over the next couple of years. You should expect it to see i ..read more
