I have received a number of emails asking about our classes so here is what I know right now. The Province has said that outdoor classes can start during step 1 of reopening Ontario (https://www.ontario.ca/page/reopening-ontario). Ontario is expected to enter step 1 of the reopening plan on the week of June 14. It is possible Ontario will enter step 1 earlier. I wish I knew more. It’s frustrating not to know. I hope the Province will give us some notice and an exact date as soon as possible. However, right now we just don’t know the exact date for reopening. All we have is an approximate date ..read more

We plan to open in May and run our learn to sail classes as close to normal as we can! 2020 ended as a memorable and very successful season. We enjoyed teaching smaller classes, couples, friends and families. We missed those who were unable to register as an individual with the intention of meeting others. We know some of you found a friend or family member who wanted to join in. That was fantastic because those people were able to share an awesome experience with someone close to them. We also found that COVID-19 didn’t prevent students and instructors interacting at a healthy distance, getti ..read more

Who is CANSail 3 for? If you’re loving sailing, want to take your sailing to the next level and learn some new skills; Ideally you would have completed one full season of sailing minimum and hold a CANSail 2 certificate. However, CANSail 3 is also great for aspiring sailors who taught themselves and / or have other recent dinghy sailing experience; If you feel confident with rigging then launching a sailboat, sailing on every point of sail, tacking, gybing and especially upwind sailing; You’re interested in racing or learning some advanced knowledge and skills. Take a CANSail 3 co ..read more

Affordable boat ownership

Toronto is a fantastic city to learn to sail because there’s many clubs and schools (including Sailing Fanatics) where you can sail without owning a boat. However, owning your own boat is awesome. Since I started sailing 22 years ago, I’ve always owned a boat in some form or another. It’s like owning a house versus renting. You can customize, sail when you want, bring whoever you want and sail a boat you want. Many people want a keelboat but I want to encourage you to consider buying a dinghy not a keelboat. Why are ongoing costs important? When buying a boat it’s important to consider ongoing ..read more

You’ve finished CANSail 2 and you’re keen to keep sailing, so what’s next? Here’s some suggestions: Go sailing Yup, simple. Get out on the water and go sailing. I strongly recommend taking some time to practice and enjoy sailing. Practice helps you get more comfortable and confident. You should feel very confident with what you have learned before moving onto the next level. This will allow you to get the most out of a class. If you’re still practicing basic skills then you won’t have the capacity to learn something new. It’s best to invest time and effort in practice then any money you spend ..read more

The sailing season can be short but I definitely look forward to its start. If you’re wondering how to make the most of a short sailing season by starting early, you’ll find that article [here]. This post takes a slightly different flavor. I’m thinking more about how to get the most out of any sailing club or school you join or learn with. Sailing Fanatics is partnered with the Outer Harbour Centerboard Club (OHCC for short). With Sailing Fanatics you get the option to use a sailboat that you don’t own, reducing a lot of the upfront and annual costs associated with boat ownership. We offer le ..read more
