In the "A Journey in the Dark" chapter in Fellowship of the Ring Gandalf mentioned that he ". . . once knew every spell in all the tongues of Elves or Men or Orcs, that was ever used for such a purpose [opening doors]. I can still remember ten score of them without searching in my mind. . . ." Did Gandalf not consider using a spell book to aid his memory? Perhaps he was afraid if he walked around Middle Earth carrying a book of spells, it could be stolen or misplaced, and fall into the wrong hands?
