It’s been a long time coming, but we decided after ten years as a business we were ready to open up a chocolate shop in a beautiful space in downtown Brattleboro, our bustling, arty, charming little town. We have taken things slowly and grown organically as a business from the start, making sure every step we make honors our commitment to the highest quality, small batch, hand made chocolates and confections, and choosing this space was no different. Located in the historic Brooks House, built in 1871 and designed in the provincial Second Empire style for George Brooks, it was originally ..read more

Flavorful dips and spreads are the perfect thing to put out for a party! Unsweetened cocoa is your secret weapon with creative spice combinations to make this unforgettable hors d’oeuvre for guests. We love combining soft goat cheese with olive oil and spices, whipping it in a food processor until fluffy and perfectly spreadable and dippable. We served this with crackers at our 9th anniversary party and it was a hit! Ingredients •10 oz soft goat cheese (chèvre) •3 Tbsp olive oil plus more as needed •1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder •3 tsp smoked paprika or ground chipotle •5 saffron threads, gr ..read more

Summertime, and the living is all over the map in Vermont. Whew. We’ve all seen the news coverage, and some of you have lived through it first hand. It is heartbreaking, and terrifying. Many of us in this area are suffering from PTSD from the last time we experienced these high and raging waters, when Hurricane Irene flooded Brattleboro and surrounding towns. Our hearts go out to those experiencing it now, and for some, again. Our little town and area were spared the worst of the recent floods, but many areas just north and south of us are in the long hard process of recovery and reassessment ..read more

Is chocolate your love language? To celebrate a romantic day or holiday (hello, Valentine’s), or treat yourself or a partner to an erogenous romp, foods that contribute to an amorous experience can make the occasion all the more fun and memorable. Many foodstuffs, notably cacao, are known for their aphrodisiacal qualities from traditional folklore to the scientifically tested and proven. So what makes a food an aphrodisiac, and does it have to be scientifically proven to create a sensual and erotic experience? Who hasn’t been transported to a memory or been attracted to the aroma wafting from ..read more

Fire cider with cacao & foraged conifer

In early fall during garlic harvest and cider pressing we like to start a batch of this fragrant, warming, restorative tonic using stuff gathered as locally as possible, and the surprising addition of cacao nibs. We love to use this elixir by mixing a tablespoon into hot tea or cider, add a glug to soups and stews, use it to make a zesty shrub or drink a teaspoon or two straight up to give our immune system a kick start when we feel under the weather. Since this recipe takes a few months to infuse and cure and blend, start it as soon as possible so you have it on hand for those wintry doldrum ..read more

Out foraging with our right hand human Bronwyn and her helper Hazel at dusk just after a rain shower, our favorite time and weather to be in the forest. Bronwyn is an herbalist and forager who grows and concocts the most beautiful things for her business Deep Rooted Apothecary. Our garden is full of lush edible flowers, herbs and vegetables from her greenhouse, and her knowledge and enthusiasm around gathering and growing wild medicinal edibles along with Dar’s botany and restaurant background is an exhilarating combo and right up our alley when it comes to crafting slow, small batch, mindful ..read more

Remember parties? Yup. We do too. And we miss them. But there’s no reason why we can’t create our own little parties for one, or small, safe and socially distant gatherings in places where vaccination rates are up and restrictions are easing. We put together these lovely little bites to go with a glass of wine and good conversation. Super simple to make and so pretty and festive, we’ll walk you through setting up these crunchy, creamy, slightly sweet, salty, nutty delights. When we first moved to Vermont, we had lots of gatherings and loved putting out a festive spread of cheeses, fruits, nu ..read more
