After pulling my mower out yesterday I noticed while mowing it was starting to slow down. Let off on the pedal then pushed back down and it seemed to work fine. It keeps doing this so I stopped and called the dealer who said to check the drive belt and the splined pulley. It is up under the seat area so I'm not able to see it very well. Hi All, I have a Scotts-branded 1742 riding mower made by John Deere. About 500 hours on the machine. Typically, it is difficult to get the mower started in the Spring after sitting all winter. A few times the issue was solved with a new carburetor, but this time it is a different problem… I cannot get the mower to turn over for very long at all (like 5 seconds). Mice ate wires to what I believe are the seat and parking brake sensors on the left side of the mower (if sitting in the seat). I have repaired all of the wires except the two red ones in the pics. They don't seem to go anywhere. Anyone know what they are for ..read more

So i came to turn the mower on this morning and all i heard was a click from solenoid so i do a couple things and end up changing the solenoid with a working one. Still does clicking and doesn’t start. Battery has good charge and is fairly new ..read more

Gentlemen, This is issue that affects all brands I just could a general maintenance topic. Please your belts before installation for them to within specs. I have known for year that aftermarket belts have to check for correct specs before installation or being into inventory. But just recently ran across a JD that was not where near spec. So I'm at a loss here. We start the mower, it rides and runs great for whatever length of time, it's inconsistent, but all of a sudden it sounds like I've come out of the seat and the seat switch has cut power. Sometimes it's just a second and then keeps running, but mostly it just dies. I'll still be able to turn on the lights, still get power to the dash to see my hour meter, and the starter can crank, but it isn't starting. I have no mechanical skills, just to clear the deck. I drained and changed oil. I drained (hand-siphoned until nothing came out) fuel tank and filled tank with fresh gas. I changed and tested spark plugs. I cleared out fuel tank vent. I installed new fuel line filter. All hoses look ok to me. Engine turns over and seems like it wants to start but doesn't. My LX176 that I bought new has the original Igniter ( BM11 / AM132770 ). The engine cranks and runs flawlessly. However, seems it takes longer to fire off when cranking than it used to. Sometimes when it does fire smoke will roll out of the exhaust muffler fairly heavy. I started pushing it out of my basement to start it because of this.
