Last weekend, we were honored to have Emmy Woods, Katy Tessman and Laura Hugo in studio. Last night we were excited to see them, plus Clare Doyle at the Leading Ladies of Americana at the Green Room. It was a great crowd with a full room attentive to the performers who each brought their own brand of energy to the stage – as well as a full band. These women can hold their own for sure, but it’s nice to have full stereo of sound behind them, especially on a Saturday night. wp-1711295355595 The night started with Emmy brings out the cool-jazz side of Americana. She can sing a sultry ..read more

Speakeazie hosts a female forward single release with Cindy Lawson, Said Kelley, Bloodline and Juniper Fly

Thursday night (March 14), Speakeazie hosted a night of female-forward music that proves “female artists” isn’t a genre. Each band had its own take on music. ANd it was great to get a chance to check out Zhora Darling, the new Res Stag. It’s a great location with the venue in the back. Speakeazie brought her dreamy synth-pop. Photographing the show, I found that Speakeazie takes amazing black and white pictures while her music presents a full color range of emotions. It’s beguiling and seeing her on stage performing adds a rich layer to her music. The new single, Jamie, You’re No Good for Me ..read more

Red Wing Big Turn never disappoints – 18 bands over two nights

Red Wing was hopping this weekend with more thank 100 performers playing at 16 different venues at the Big Turn Festival. It’s fewer performers and venues than last year. I missed a few of the venues but I have to admit, I don’t miss missing so many bands because turns out you can only be in one place at a time. Missing bands is a real struggle. It was fun to run into so many people and I’m going to apologize to the folks I wanted to see but couldn’t. That list is twice as long as the bands I did see. We started the weekend picking up our festival wrist bands at the Sheldon Theater by seeing D ..read more

Drone not Drones 2024: new band favorites and a hiccup

Drones not Drones is 28 hours of drone music at the Cedar Cultural Center. This is the ninth anniversary; founder Luke Heiken has turned an outrageous idea into local favorite and a nice benefit for Doctors without Borders. People come like they were going camping with sleeping bags, books and slippers. I was there from 7:20pm on Friday (just missing the opening band, which made me so sad) until 3am. At midnight I thought they might have to start turning people away but, as it usually does, the crowd thinned a bit as the night got later. The goal for performers is to keep the drone going witho ..read more

Samuel Wilbur album release with Kiernan and full catholic – honest and uplifting

Samuel Wilbur puts life lessons into song in a way that’s clever, compassionate, and best of all catchy. It’s not didactic because he sings from the voice of an equal, not a superior. I left the show feeling like a member of community that made me want to do better. https://mostlyminnesotadotcom.files.wordpress.com/2024/01/wp-1705679841134.mp4 I had the opportunity to ask Sam 5 Questions right after Christmas so, in full disclosure, I knew he was a teacher when I headed out to his album release (The Age) last night but last night I learned, he’s like your favorite teacher because he brings up ..read more

A very Minnesota night with the Replacements Tribute at the Turf Club

Saturday night (Dec 2) was an amazing celebration of and by Minnesota musicians for the Replacements Tribute night. There was music upstairs and in the Clown Louge. The Clown Lounger featured Hilary James, Ava Levy and Loki’s Folly. They should have music in the Clown Lounger more often. It was nice to have a quieter setting to really soak up a few songs. Upstairs started with a Mad Ripple Hoot for Slim Dunlap. The band features Jim Walsh, Terry Walsh, Doug Collins, Joe Baumgart and Billy Dankert. It eased the sold out crowd into the era and the mood of our youth. Then, The Melismatics hosted ..read more

The Silent Disco was hopping with d’Lakes album release at the Green Room

Thursday night (Nov 30),  d’Lakes  filled the Green Room with joy for the release of their latest album, Heavan is a Silent Disco. In a recent interview with lead signer Drew d’Lakes, that the “album essentially takes the listener through being in the joys of meeting a life partner!” And that is the energy that filled the room. Even introducing “a sad song,” Drew couldn’t pry the smile off his face. Nor could the audience. The music is the soundtrack to the joy. There’s something futuristically retro about the sound. I hear jazz, funk, new wave – all on synthy steroids. It’s hard not ..read more

It was part 1970’s variety show and part family party at the Parkway Theater Sunday night for The International Treasures’ Big Fat Album release show. Doyle Turner and Ted Hajnasiewicz are the International Treasures, they were the heart of the night but as is their wont, they turned everyone into the stars. wp-1695043928967 The show was hosted by Ryan and Matt Rud of The Rabbit Hole; they brought in their dinner jackets and sofa. They asked performers a few questions and set the stage for a homey and fancy night. They night started with The Severin Moving Company. In fact, I think this was ..read more

Monday music in Mpls: Sarah Morris, Gwar, Mayda and Student 1

I see a lot of music; I’m lucky. Some nights are such a mixed bag of genres and vibes that I have to stop and think about how great it is to live in the Twin Cities and to thank the musicians, venues, bookers, promoters, just everyone who makes wonderfully weird nights happen – especially on a Monday. wp-1693325521932 The night started at the Dakota, a classy romantic date-night set up, to see singer songwriter Sarah Morris. Sarah has a gorgeous voice. Last night I realized that her voice reminds me of Anne Murray, a voice from my childhood, friendly and comforting but also so pure. Sarah p ..read more

So excited to share two new songs by PARISHES – Fashion As Protest and Calamity Jane. PARISHES is the bluesy brainchild of Taylor Carik (also in Mpls Whiskey Rock ‘n’ Roll Club); we spoke to him in studio as soon at the station reopened after the pandemic. PARISHES started as a mostly solo project and it still is with Taylor playing or programming all the instruments, but he has picked up some awfully special guests along the way. PARISHES – Fashion As Protest Video Fashion As Protest Sally Linda (Big Salt) lends her patiently sultry voice to the Fashion As Protest. There’s a cool vibe to t ..read more
