If you know of anything interesting happening related to sexual health, or if you think we should absolutely meet and visit the Vagina Museum together, drop a message! Vaginal estrogen and menopause

Having attended so many conferences with world class researchers, I have to give back Vulvae! Yeah! We love them. They are a fun spot for slippery actions. But sometimes they are a pain, and they give us pain, and they are out of control and it is definitely #UNCOOL. One of the reason that can make vulvae misbehave is menopause/perimenopause: the drop of estrogen causes tissues to thin up which can bring about irritations, infections, dryness, urinary urgency, urinary tract infections and the likes (it’s called the genito-urinary syndrom of menopause). They suck, they impact quality of life a ..read more

Introducing the International Cliteratti

Anita knows she has an uncommon profession. She regularly visits sex shops, talks to sex workers — words like vulva, erection and orgasm are all part of a productive day on the job. Working as an occupational therapist, Anita specialises in helping people living with illness or disability with their sex lives. The Melbourne-based health worker was struggling to teach some of her clients about the vulva. She had a puppet which was “fantastic” but not anatomically correct. She also had line drawings but they were useless for her clients who are blind. Anita Brown-Major has developed an interacti ..read more

Lichen Sclerosus Workshop

Process and results from the last weekend. Five new models are joining the database. Specificity: all models live with lichen sclerosus, an autoimmune condition that can affect people of all genders and attacks the mucous membranes of the genitalia. This causes burning, pain, thickening and whitening of the skin, fusion of the inner labia to the outer labia and other un-joyfull symptoms. A very uncool condition, poorly understood, poorly diagnosed and really poorly treated. Fortunately, there are expert-patients like Jaclyn from The Lost Labia Chronicles who have tackled the problem head-on an ..read more

Living with lichen sclerosus?

SEX-ED + and The Lost Labia Cronicles are teaming up for a day to organize a support/discussion workshop for and by people living with lichen sclerosus. WHERE? In Montreal, near the Jean Talon market WHEN? Saturday, June 1, from 1 to 4 p.m. WHY? Few resources exist to support people living with vulvar conditions. That’s why we’re taking advantage of Jaclyn’s visit (she usually lives in Toronto) to organize a workshop for and by those who are affected. Before and after the workshop, there will be an opportunity for those who wish to do so to make a cast of their own vulva and take it home with ..read more

Workers’ rights

This picture of striking matchbooks makers highlights the struggles that have advanced our rights, and the importance of mobilizing to preserve them. Without parental leave, public health coverage, daycare and public schools, our lives wouldn’t be the same. Sexual health is not disconnected from our material conditions of existence. Let’s keep on fighting and reclaiming our right to pleasure and dignity. At SEX-ED +, how do we combine capitalism-adverse values and business management? 1- No boss, no employee From the onset, SEX-ED + has been a solo project. Because I don’t want a boss, and I d ..read more

Why attend sexual health and rights conferences?
SEX-ED +

You may have noticed that I have been going around quite a bit this year. But why is important for SEX-ED + to invest time and resources in conferences? (reminder: those don’t come cheap- AT ALL!) First there is the need to reach the audience for which the project is intended. As SEX-ED + is shadow-banned (blocked from view even if the page is still there) on all social media, there is no other way to be seen than to get out of the basement and go and meet people. On the plus side, folks attending those conferences are pretty cool. Then, there is the need to know where people, researchers and ..read more

Just back from two weeks in Europe, it is time to share what happened back there. After Brussels, for the day of zero tolerance against FGM/C (see previous post), I went to Geneva to attend a multiplicity of events and meet a plethora of uber nice colleagues, collaborators and friends. The first of those are Julien Da Costa and Christophe Lamy, from the Anatomy Unit of the University of Geneva. They developed a fantastic software named Sketchnote3D, specially developed for using 3D scanned material in educational settings. They were nice enough to partner with SEX-ED + in the early stages of ..read more

On February 6, in Brussels, during the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Genital Mutilation, a partnership that began five years ago came full circle. First date in Montreal It was on February 6, 2019 that SEX-ED + and GAMS Belgium crossed paths for the first time at a conference, followed by a coffee. We then started dreaming of creating specific tools to accompany people who have had excision/infibulation.   Feb 2019, SEX-ED + kitchen Going long-distance during a pandemic It took a few years and a pandemic to bring together all the elements necessary to make this project a reality ..read more
