Biodiversity and sustainable home building
Undersea Productions

Firstly let me apologise and warn you marine enthusiasts that this blog post is not a typical Undersea Productions post, and I promise not to do this again, but these are crazy times. This post is all about the shipping container house I just finished building as an untrained DIY enthusiast and avid recycler on a budget trying to protect and encourage biodiversity in my own backyard. Bridge over pond with Pandanus mound on the left Since April 2012, in between dive trips, shoots, endless cataloging and COVID, I have pulled down three houses destined for demolition(and burning in one case) and ..read more

Palau upcoming trip appetite whetter

Highlights from our trip in 2014   With our upcoming Palau trip hopefully fast approaching, I decided on a trip down memory lane to remind myself what is in store for us. As usual I couldn’t resist the urge to edit down the trip video I shot there in 2014 into a highlight reel. Unusually, I decided to make it much longer than my typical 2-3minutes to a whopping at 7minutes.  This was the last trip I did with my trusty Panasonic HVX200 HD camera before moving to the data hogging Sony Z100 4K rig I use now, so the picture quality — particularly in the wide angle stuff — isn’t so great ..read more

Cooloola Underwater Biodiversity Assessment (continued) | 4K video and species list
Undersea Productions

Following the success of the first look underwater in Tin Can Bay (CUBA – Cooloola Underwater Biodiversity Assessment) and some of the problems that study highlighted, we were again fortunate to receive an Environment Levy Grant from Gympie Regional Council thanks to Cooloola Coastcare. This project (CUBA3) was designed to further investigate each of the creeks entering the system to see where the best and worst affected areas might be. We also focused on mooring and anchoring areas to determine the extent of damage being done. The above video is the best 2mins 45secs out of more than 7hrs of ..read more

Scuba Diving in Raja Ampat, Indonesia: species list and 4K underwater video footage
Undersea Productions
by Josh Jensen

The Indonesian Ministry of Tourism asked us to join a small group of other Aussie underwater photographers, filmmakers and dive travel professionals on a familiarisation trip to Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Our mission: simply have a look, and show the world what we saw. Although I had been to Raja Ampat twice previously, I jumped at the chance to return for the 4-day expedition aboard Sea Safari 8 to what I consider to be my mecca: the world’s epicentre of marine biodiversity. We were warmly welcomed and looked after every step of the way by tourism staff, boat crew, and dive guides. We hiked to s ..read more

Tin Can Bay (Cooloola) marine biodiversity assessment: species list and 4K underwater video footage
Undersea Productions
by Josh Jensen

We recently completed the first underwater marine biodiversity assessment for Tin Can Bay (Cooloola, Queensland). With great support from the local boating community, Cooloola Coastcare, and the Gympie Regional Council, we knocked over the 40 dives required and recorded around 230 species. Tin Can Bay is an estuary system at the bottom of the bay created by Fraser Island—super popular with fisherfolk, it is a high use and high impact patch of water. This film shows some of the highs and lows. My best guesses at naming the critters are listed below… —Josh Time What 0:10 Red lateral mark ..read more

4K Underwater Video: Revillagigedo Archipelago (Socorro Islands) Diving
Undersea Productions
by Josh Jensen

The Revillagigedo Archipelago (unfortunately impossible to pronounce by most English speakers) is more commonly known as the Socorro Islands, and has been on our bucket list since we first heard the name mispronounced many moons ago. Socorro is actually one of four islands in the archipelago, located around 240 nautical miles southwest off Mexico’s Pacific coast. It’s a bloody long way off shore—a full day’s steam for the liveaboard dive boats that work the area. Solmar V was our ship of choice for this expedition. The volcanic islands would be almost impossible to land on even if you were al ..read more

4K Underwater Video: A Fish Geek’s View of the Fiji Islands, in 2160p UltraHD

We recently re-visited the Fiji Islands, and our former home the dive liveaboard NAI’A, for an 11-night expedition through our old stomping grounds. Aware of the hammering Fiji copped at the hands of Cyclone Winston—the strongest storm to hit Fiji in recorded history, and killer of 44 Fijians—it was with some apprehension that we boarded the ship. It had only been 9 months since Winston, but we knew from our prior storm experiences that Fiji recovers quickly from strong natural disturbances… so there was plenty to be hopeful for. Very soon after Winston passed, NAI’A had already done most of ..read more

4K Underwater Indonesia Stock Footage Demo Reel: Marine Biodiversity in 2160p UltraHD
Undersea Productions
by Josh Jensen

Here’s my latest 4K 2160p stock footage demo reel, highlighting (as always) marine biodiversity and the connections between coral reef species. The underwater stock footage was filmed over the course of nearly one year during our various Indonesia dive expeditions to Bali, Komodo, Raja Ampat, Lembeh, Fakfak and Triton Bay. The Raja Ampat and Lembeh Strait expeditions were my first with the incredible GT14 underwater video lights from Gates—they are brilliant in every sense of the word and are my new favourite piece of kit. You can see them exclusively in action for the first 30-seconds of thi ..read more
