Hi everyone, I work for a solar company in Cape Town. Over the last few weeks I have been going through the SANS 10142 Ed 3.1 (2021) in order to check that our standard operating procedures are up to scratch. This version of SANS is however a bit thin when it comes to solar regulations and also battery systems. I heard that there is a 2023 draft version out that is much more comprehensive on solar regulations that isn't yet implemented but will be in the near future and I was wondering if anyone has a copy to share?  ..read more

Should I earth the solar panel frame with a 50 - 100 kA lightning arrestor

The law is very simple, a solarpanel frame has to be earthed. I am personnaly totally against earthing a solar panel frame, except if it has a suitable 50 - 100KA lightning surge arrestor between earth and panel frame.. . However lightning will dispose of it energy by finding the best earth. That is not allways the shortest route.  If your panel frame is the best earthed metal in the area, you are a sitting duck.  If I look at all the high rise buidings in Johannesburrg, the frames of the alluminum windows are not earthed and I have not heard or experienced in the near 25 year ..read more

Good day   Please give me your option i just want to know if you accept a Quote for Solar and the Company say they give you a COC after work is done in the mean time you cant Insure your system because they require a COC so that means the Contractor or Company will still be Reliable for the system if you get damages or Stolen am i correct? After agreeing of the Quote they take deposit and once work is done and COC is handed over you settle the Balance but in the mean time you as the contractor decide not to finish your work and went on holyday and still no COC is handed over and system go ..read more

At last COJ have started rolling out the soft upgrades for the prepaid meters. When you buy a token you get THREE numbers to input. The first two perform the TID update, the third is the credit and will only work on the upgraded meter.  I did this yesterday. I bought a small amount through FNB as per usual, and got a message with three numbers (as is supposed to happen). Punched them in one at a time and got the amount I paid for. The existing credit balance was retained, and the meter serial number did not change. Go to @CitypowerJhb on X and look for the announcements that were sent ..read more

Hello   I need some help, I have a debate with a technical manager at a solar company regarding the charging of a Lithium Ion battery, the supplier device does not have the option for a Lithium battery, it is a 3kVA inverter. The charging algorithm is shown below. The supplier insists that just by setting the floating charge and bulk charge according to the battery(Pylontech UP2500) that it will not cause any issues. The inverter also shows SOC of the battery on 70-80% whereas the battery SOC indicator states 40-50%. The supplier stated this makes no difference. Please assist.   Regar ..read more

There was a short in one of our ac outlets connected to our inverter which was tripping it.  It seems to have melted the fuse holder. Interestingly it did not break the fuse.  Anyone know what is going on here?  I've sorted out the short. Waiting to find out more before I connect the battery. Don't want to blow the Bms.   ..read more
