3 Common Misconceptions About Restorative Yoga Originally published by Andrea Peloso | Yoga International I felt the summer heat on my bike handles as I sped home. I had just finished teaching my third Ashtanga vinyasa class of the day. My bike ride was usually fun and I had an evening planned with friends. So why did I feel so grumpy? I became frustrated with myself.  I tried to bury my feelings, but they were a symptom of a deeper problem. A fog of sleeplessness, muscular tension, and depleted immunity had begun to cloud my life. Despite all of the profound benefits of the physical yoga ..read more

Back on the Mat

I have been an avid yoga practitioner for the better part of twenty years and I didn't realize just how much of a positive impact it had on both my body and mind, until I took a year off. The physical ramifications were huge, but not only did my body begin to ache, but my mind fidgeted more and I found myself less focused, more easily agitated, and less patient overall. That little practice I had maintained for so long on the mat went much deeper than thought. It literally kept me younger, more balanced and grounded. Needless to say I’m back on the mat and anytime I'm overly frustrated, I go ..read more

Don’t we all want to sleep better, find relieve from stress and live a healthier happier life? The need to take care of our physical and mental health has nothing to do with being a man or a woman. It has to do with being a human being living in the busy, hectic and sometimes scary age we live in. So why are men so reluctant to try yoga? “I slept so much better!” — Ray Dimitri I was lucky to try yoga for the first time at work. Working in engineering means that 85% of my coworkers are men. So when my employer provided yoga classes at the office once a week, although I wasn’t too sure about “th ..read more

The Examined Life by Bram Levinson In honour of the month of Movember + MAKE A MOVE, we’re spotlighting our marvelous Mo Bros and their journeys to live happier, healthier, longer lives. Yoga has been a part of my life for over two decades, and continues to surprise me in the ways that it contributes to my wellness. I started off with a gentle Hatha practice that introduced me to the postures, but it was in that gentle-styled practice that I was taught how to become aware of my breathing. Without explaining it as a mindfulness practice per se, the moment I was taught to be aware of, and to d ..read more

Marina Advanced Luna Teacher Training grad 2019 Teaches Yoga in the Park Fridays 6-7pm When I first started practicing yoga, I just thought it would be a good activity to pair with my weight training, in order to help me increase flexibility. I honestly had little other expectations of it. What I soon noticed, was that I felt much more balanced mentally after taking a yoga class. And that sense of balance happened every time. The more I practiced, the more it became evident, that yoga was not only good for my body, but was in fact having the largest impact on my mental health. I did ..read more

Olivia LYTT grad 2019 Teaches Yoga in the Park Wednesdays 6-7pm 1. Why did you start practicing/teaching yoga? It was around 5 years ago, at the beginning of my career, as a software developer in a fast-paced company, I was very stressed all the time, and plus I was taking French classes at night to prepare for the Quebec immigration tests, and I didn’t do any exercises. Soon I got many health problems, I got heavy back pain due to sitting all day long, headache and I lost my sleep. Then a friend of mine recommended me to do Yoga and he recommended Luna. After a few classes, I felt ..read more

Katy LYTT grad 2020 teaches Yoga in the Park on Thursdays 6-7pm I started practicing yoga long before lululemon and yoga jeans.  I first tried it out of curiosity while in university, and stuck with it because it made me feel calm, strong, and connected.  ~ It has been a joy to practice at studios in various cities and experience where different teachers can lead my body and my mind.  When I was a dancer, doing yoga was one of the ways I could keep strong and flexible.  Now that I am no longer working as a dancer, yoga serves as a door back into the sensations I used ..read more

Is Yoga a Cult?
Luna Yoga Blog
by Cheryl Sim

“While I am quite convinced that as a yoga practitioner, I am not part of a cult, I am sensitive to how these ideas might be formed.” Like many, I came to yoga looking for an alternative to high impact, performance oriented forms of exercise.  I bought video cassettes (this was a while ago!) and then took the odd class at the gym that I was weaning myself away from. I enjoyed how it was physically challenging as well as really effective at helping me focus.  A few years later, when I acknowledged that my stressful job was exacerbating my anxiety levels, I decided it was time to deepe ..read more
