Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are valued native pollinators in our gardens in Western North Carolina. We see milkweeds (Asclepias spp.) as ideal pollinator plants because Monarchs can only lay their eggs on milkweeds and the caterpillars that hatch from these eggs feed on milkweeds.
