Different plants have different winter care requirements regarding light and temperature.  Below is a list of some popular plants and their winter preferences. Why doesn’t my Hydrangea bloom?
Wentworth Greenhouses Blog

WHY DOESN’T MY HYDRANGEA BLOOM? This is a commonly asked question with three possible answers. The first two – not enough sun and incorrect pruning practices – apply to all species of hydrangea. The third – weather related damage to the flower buds – is usually only the culprit of bigleaf hydrangeas not flowering. Most hydrangeas do need shade, however too much shade can cause your hydrangea to greatly reduce its flowering potential. (For example, Hydrangea paniculata will be at its best in full sun). Bigleaf, oakleaf and smooth hydrangeas will typically do best if they are placed on the north ..read more

Decorating with a living Christmas Tree

LIVING CHRISTMAS TREE Family traditions are a big part of the holiday season.  Many families have created landscapes that are planted with evergreens from Christmas past.  Properly planned, a live tree can be decorated, enjoyed and eventually planted. Timing is important.  You need to prepare the planting site while the ground is still workable.  In our area the ground will not freeze until late November.  Choose a spot that will provide the tree with full sun and well-drained soil. Be sure to dig to the same depth but 4-6” wider than the width of the tree to allow for ..read more

The happy faces of the viola and pansy are beaming in the greenhouse sunshine! Although these guys can handle the cool nights they have been growing inside the protection of our greenhouses so please take care to harden them off. This means you want to get them used to being outside so they will acclimate appropriately. Take your pansies and violas inside at night for about a week. Keep an eye on the weather, they can take a light frost but if we get down below 30 they may get damaged. Cover them with a sheet or bring them if the temps dip that low. Place your pansies and violas in full to par ..read more

VENUS FLY-TRAP   Venus Fly-Traps are one of the most remarkable plants in the world!  These plants are native to the marshes of North and South Carolina.  When discovered they were highly sought after and almost brought to extinction.  Now they are greenhouse grown to provide this curious plant to the general population. Care of the Venus Fly-trap is pretty simple.  These plants will take care of themselves as far as feeding.  Did you know that a trap only requires a few insects a year?  As the plants mature their traps turn black.  Cut the black traps o ..read more

Clean Air Plants For centuries people have brought plants indoors to decorate their homes.  There’s just something about the lush, living greenness that comforts and soothes the soul.  Now there is scientific evidence to corroborate that feeling.  In 1989 a study was conducted by NASA to find what effects plants have on air quality.  Over a period of two years they tested 19 common houseplants on their ability to remove chemicals from the air.  The chemicals tested were formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene.  These chemicals were selected because of their p ..read more
