The Catholic Man Reviews

As many of you know, The Catholic Man has a great devotion to Bl. Carlo Acutis, or in more secular terms, a fan of his. It is no wonder why many English materials about Carlo Acutis has been featured on our blog. You have heard from a priest serving in Assisi, from a french priest, from a fiction writer, from the postulator, but now, Our Sunday Visitor is giving you the opportunity to hear from his mother. Almost a year after Carlo’s beatification, the Italian publisher, Piemme, released a book titled, Il segreto di mio figlio: Perché Carlo Acutis è considerato un santo (The Secret of My Son ..read more

The Liturgy Series: Word on Fire’s The Liturgy of the Hours monthly prayer resource
The Catholic Man Reviews

Note: For consistency, the term breviary is used in this post to refer to the hardcopy four-volume Liturgy of the Hours. The Liturgy of the Hours is the Prayer of the Church – prayed around the clock by members of the Church all around the world. Some may think it is a prayer reserved for the clergy and religious, but the Catechism of the Catholic Church has affirmed that, “The Liturgy of the Hours is intended to become the prayer of the whole People of God.” (1175, emphasis added) However, the hard-copy breviaries that you sometimes see priests and religious carry around in leather cases wit ..read more

Review: For Love of the Church – A Festschrift on the Interests and Accomplishments of His Eminence Thomas Cardinal Collins
The Catholic Man Reviews

While a majority of our blog readers are American, I believe my ordinary, Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archdiocese of Toronto deserves a spotlight on this blog. Probably, one of the perks during my time as a part-time sacristan at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica (2019-2021) was being able to frequently hear homilies from my Archbishop. It was a captivating 15-minutes every time Cardinal Collins went to the ambo to give the homily at the Masses which he celebrated. When churches were closed in March 2020 until June 2020 due to COVID-19, Cardinal Collins was preaching at his Daily Masses everyday ..read more

The Liturgy Series: Sanny de Zoete’s Altar Linens
The Catholic Man Reviews

On this day, the Catholic Church in Canada (where I reside), and in many other dioceses of the world celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Our Lord, Jesus Christ, more commonly known as the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. I thought it would be best to speak about beauty in the liturgy, and specifically, on the altar. Since the beginning of The Liturgy Series, The Catholic Man has strived to feature exceptional liturgical objects for use in the liturgy. Some might be tempted to think that being nit-picky about having beautiful objects at the liturgy is going too far – as lon ..read more

Book Review: The Catholic Faith – An Introduction to the Creeds
The Catholic Man Reviews
by Vincent Pham
2y ago
At the Easter Vigil Mass Catholics renew their Baptismal Promises and make the Profession of Faith in a question-and-answer form. Moreover, Catholics profess their faith at the Mass every week on Sundays through the recitation of the Nicene or Apostles’ Creed. Yet what is it, really, that we say and profess in the Creed? Do we take the Profession of Faith seriously? Or do we go through the motions each time we recite the Creed or Renew our Profession of Faith? I think it is easy for us to fall into the trap of routine, not only with our prayer, but also with our own profession of faith ..read more

The Liturgy Series: Sacred Oils, by Fr. Paul Turner
The Catholic Man Reviews
by Vincent Pham

In the last installment of The Liturgy Series, The Catholic Man featured a title by liturgist Fr. Paul Turner, Ars Celebrandi – Celebrating and Concelebrating Mass. Shortly thereafter, he wrote a book of a less complex title, Sacred Oils. I think by the title, you can already tell what the book is already about. But honestly, how many Catholics really understand the significance of the oils that are used in the sacraments? I think one can reduce the Sacred Oils merely as an association of a liturgical action and boom, done. However, Fr. Turner wants to point out in this book that there is so ..read more

Journey Through Lent: Reflections on the Daily Mass Readings
The Catholic Man Reviews
by Vincent Pham

Let’s turn the clock back a bit… how did your Lenten Season go? I know it seems odd that I be speaking about a publication about Lent, but I did question myself: Should I review this title half-way through Lent, or after? I received an e-copy on Shrove Tuesday, and used the e-copy for about a week until the hard-copy came. I decided that it was just not appropriate to review something which you have not used in its totality, so decided the best time to do it was after Lent. Moreover, the update I recently gave, would give an explainer of other factors why. Lent flew by too quickly compared to ..read more

The Catholic Man Reviews

Some of our readers may have noticed that The Catholic Man Reviews was on hiatus from mid-March to now (mid-May). This has raised some questions among some of our readers, and I truly appreciate the great messages and concerns you have expressed to us. As some of you may know, both my sister and I are currently undergraduate students, studying at the University of Toronto. This blog started when I was a high school student, and thoroughly enjoyed featuring books and a wide variety of Catholic products on this blog. We thank publishers and collaborators who have gratefully collaborated with us ..read more
