Last day to see my solo booth with Microscope Gallery @ the 2021 Frieze NYC Viewing Room! Virtually Come thru! Ina Archer is an artist expanding the possibilities of moving image, installation, sculpture, and collage. Archer’s works draw attention to stereotypical and degrading representations of African Americans and the “other” in commercial cinema, literature, art, and product branding from the 1900s to the present. Often through the use of humor, Archer re-makes and re-contextualizes images of blackness to address themes of race, race relations, and cultural appropriation. Follow the lin ..read more

I am honored to be included in this lovely, thoughtful volume. I'm humbled by the company! Think of this as a way to engage with NMAAHC, aka "The Mack", our own "Blacksonian" as we move through this complicated moment and we are able to meet again on the National Mall. Please see editors Jason Fox and Mia Mask's letter below and explore my contribution: Conspiracies and Caretakers: Making Homes for African American Home Movies Dear Friends,  We didn't imagine publishing this issue in a moment of crisis for so many people. We are doing so, not to ignore the enormity of what ..read more

(Look out!) I was happy to write this piece for Film Comment Selects in collaboration with Turner Classic Movies. Like another mature lady, Blanche Dubois, I always appreciate the kindness of my youthful editor, Nic Rapold. "Their depictions of aging equate a natural human process with the absolute loss of beauty and of sexual appeal, not to mention imminent death. In these films the creeping specters of infertility, loneliness, and madness render any expression of desire as an opportunity for humiliation. Could Roman Spring and Reflections then be more appropriately viewed as horror movies ..read more

I was pleased to write a feature article on Fences for Film Comment Magazine! Excerpt:     The minimal use of cinematic space and time exemplifies the layered metaphors of Fences, the gradual building of which organizes the action of the play, keeping the family members in and others out. But at key moments, especially in a bit of magic realism near the end, the POV soars beyond the home. The camera elegantly frames the actors as they declaim, becoming an unseen third player in their scenes, assisted by the exceptional sound recording and editing. The extras (local resi ..read more
