Our Pet Health Centers team jumped into action recently with the arrival of Kira, a 9-month-old English Bulldog mix who was surrendered to us in significant distress. Not only was Kira in heat, but she had a prolapse of her rectum and a possible hernia that was so painful, she had to be sedated to allow our veterinary staff to examine her. Because Kira had not been spayed, Chief of Veterinary Staff Dr. Mark Verdino performed the procedure while also giving her an in-depth exam, and discovered her medical condition was different than expected. Kira did not have a hernia but a nodular gro ..read more

Love = Responsibility What “owning” a pet really means. Besides being the month of love, hearts, and roses, February is also Responsible Pet Owners Month. And although it’s the shortest month of the year — even in a leap year —it’s full of reminders about how best to care for our animal companions. The most important of all these reminders is about spay/neuter because you cannot be a responsible pet person without supporting spay/neuter. I have to admit I feel sorry for people who have never loved a pet. For me, this relationship is just so incredibly precious. The affinity I feel for anima ..read more

Love and compassion filled the air at the Pet Health Centers when Leah, a sweet hound mix puppy, and Donnie, a charming cat with special needs, found themselves at the center of a story that transcended barriers and melted hearts. Leah first arrived to our Pet Health Centers suffering from a mysterious illness – one that her previous owners decided they could not handle and they surrendered her into our care. We were not going to give up on her however, and our medical team began an exhaustive search for answers. It was during her extended stay in our medical center that Leah met Donni ..read more

Question After paying a person who is supposed to be selling a dog upfront, they keep asking for more money, such as gas money and extra fees. Now they are asking us to fill out a registry paper that requires our name, driver's license, social security number, and address. Is this normal, or is it a scam? Answer I cannot say if you are being scammed, although there have been several scams throughout the country involving the sale of animals, including animals who never even existed. It is more prudent to pay when getting the animal in person, but you must know that at this point. While shelter ..read more

Question Our chipped 13-year-old dog wandered from home while we were away. He was picked up and taken to another town's animal care facility. However, they never contacted us and gave him away. Do we have any rights in this situation? Answer Shelters will sometimes contact a new adopter and request the return of an animal under the circumstances you described. New York State law requires shelters to check companion animals for ID, including microchips, tags, tattoos, and licenses. The law further states: “No later than twenty-four hours or as soon as practicable after the seizure or taking po ..read more

Question My dog didn't make it, and now we have a $5,000.00 vet bill. I am disabled and make $1,000.00 a month on disability. What, or is there something I can do? Can the ex-wife be responsible because the dog lives with both of them? Answer I am very sorry to hear about your dog. A lawsuit can be brought to try to get compensated. Small Claims Courts are user friendly and it is inexpensive to commence lawsuits in these courts. More than one person can be named as a defendant. It may be difficult to prove that the ex-wife should be responsible for damages caused by the dog since she was not l ..read more

Question I paid a cat breeder in full in June 2023. She operates a closed cattery and promised a kitten in December. However, she offered me a kitten from a different cattery, not under her care, and is refusing to refund me. She is attempting to shift blame to me for not accepting that kitten. What are my rights in this situation? Answer Oh, if only you went to a shelter and adopted one of the many cats who need a loving, forever home! People who believe that their contract has been violated and want a refund or specific performance (meaning complying with the contract) can sue. However, verb ..read more

It’s a new year!

It’s a new year! Let’s save some more lives In Spain, people eat 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight and a new year begins, one “good luck grape” for each of the next twelve months. In Denmark, they banish bad spirits by throwing old plates and glasses against the doors of family and friends. And in Italy, they wear red underwear because red is associated with prosperity and fertility…or maybe like Ruby Rose, they look really good in red! For me, the beginning of a new year means working even harder to help homeless animals find warmth, safety, and love for the rest of their lives. No ma ..read more
