The fate of five puppies scheduled to be euthanized in an overcrowded Texas shelter on Christmas Eve hung in the balance. Fortunately, North Shore Animal League America knows that there are no holidays for animal rescue. Our Mobile Unit was already in the area, working with Paws4Life , to pick up 35 dogs and puppies that had been recently saved from shelters throughout Louisiana and Texas. In the nick of time, the five puppies – Buster, Lady, Taika, Kano, and Greta – were saved from the brink of death and soon joined the rest of their traveling companions headed to our Port Washington, NY ..read more

At North Shore Animal League America, we are specialists in healing broken hearts and spirits. For ten-year-old black Labrador Kimber and her new adopted family, finding each other made this holiday season especially joyful. Adopted at Animal League America as a puppy, Kimber had only known life in a loving home. Sadly, her owner passed away, but he had the foresight to include Animal League America in his estate plan, with the provision that Kimber would come to us should anything happen to him. As it turned out, she would not be with us for very long! Meanwhile Cynthia was grieving the ..read more

Beginning the Year Right! News flash: January 24 is Change a Pet’s Life Day, and in my opinion, it ought to be a national holiday. Close the banks, hold the mail, and only essential workers need to show up for work. Everybody else gets a paid day off to make the world better for pets, including Jessica Rabbit and Cocomelon who, like all of our nuggets, have returned the favor and changed our lives forever. I wish I had a magic wand or Aladdin’s Lamp so I could change life for every animal on the planet. But alas, I don’t, which means we all have to work hard and have great ideas to get the j ..read more

Question My kids were at my house alone and the Humane Society came there because someone called about my dogs being outside. They have doghouses, food and water, and weren’t out there for along time. When I called to redeem my dogs they told me because no one answered the door I wasn’t allowed to take them back home with me. Answer The right of an animal’s “parent” to retrieve his/her animal from a shelter depends on the reason why the animal was seized or ended up at the shelter. Payment of impound fees are generally required. Laws in certain areas also require spaying/neutering, purchase of ..read more

Question I purchased a puppy from a breeder in NC on Sunday, 11-13-22. Since having her she hasn’t eaten, she won’t drink and isn’t very active. I took her to the vet today, Wednesday 11-16-22 and was told that she’s infested with round worms and may possibly require surgery to remove them. No vet checks by breeder who self vaccinated and deworming of her animals ( I failed to question this prior to purchase). After informing breeder of these findings she continues to deny any wrong doings and insists that she dewormed all of her animals and they were free of worms. This is obviously not the c ..read more

Question My dog went to the groomers two days ago and they sent him home with a broken paw. I just want to know what we can do. Answer I am so sorry to hear about your dog. I hope he makes a full recovery. People who believe that a groomer’s negligence caused harm to their animal can sue to try to get compensated, including, for example, for veterinary expenses incurred in treating their animal’s injuries. If the groomer has insurance and/or if the groomer acknowledges liability, it may be possible to settle the claim without the necessity of litigation. Complaints may also be made with consum ..read more

Question Someone gave me a puppy to watch because she could not care for him. He was about 2 months old when I took him in. I have now had him for about 10 months, have paid for all his food and vet bills and care. That person now wants the dog back. He will not live a good life with her and he’s happy with me and my family. Do I have the power to keep him even if he is registered in her name? Answer People who give their animals away generally have no further rights to those animals and the people to whom the animals were given generally have no legal obligation to return the animals. Question My dog got out of our locked gate for the first time. Within 3 hours I'd located her at Animal Services and was ready to pick her up. Six hours later they called me and said I have to allow them to spay her or I cant have her back. Is this legal?? What are my rights?? I'm urgently trying to get this figured out because I only have a day or two before they then say I've surrendered her. Can you please help? I don't want her spayed ESPECIALLY without me present and not having chosen the vet to do it. Answer Some localities have laws that require shelters to spay/neuter dogs and cats bef ..read more

The next day call from breeder said he made a mistake and that he already had a deposit for said puppy, and wanted it back. What are our rights to keep this puppy? Thank you very much for your time.
