Writer’s Workshop: What Would Beyonce Do?
Mama's Losin' It!

1. Write about someone who inspires you. A post shared by Beyoncé (@beyonce) on Feb 7, 2016 at 7:13pm PST When I’m trying to inspire myself to work through fatigue and feel tempted to give in to a nap, I’m all, “Do you think Beyonce naps!? Do you think Oprah became Oprah by napping?? Come on Kat, get it together!” I’ll skim through my list of successful, wonderful, hard working women and my response to myself is “You’re right. They don’t stop moving. They are on the go from sun up to sun down. They are building empires. They are shooting magazine covers, selling out concerts, creating clot ..read more

Writer’s Workshop: The Simple Way To Her Heart
Mama's Losin' It!
by Mama Kat
1w ago
5. Write a blog post inspired by the word: simple. There are four adults in my house this week. Laina is turning 18 on Friday and it’s safe to say I have lost control of time. She was three when I started my blog and I would write about the purple house of her dreams and her obsession with dogs. All these years later I’m still writing but she traded her purple house dreams in for a fast car. She does still pester me about getting her a German Shepard though…I guess there are some things you just don’t grow out of. Other things she did not outgrow: 1. A love for cheesy meals that also make he ..read more

Writer’s Workshop: I Fixed It Myself
Mama's Losin' It!
by Mama Kat
2w ago
2. Write about something you fixed. I asked him to change the bulb in my headlights for me and he was all, “why don’t you come on outside and I’ll show you how to do that!” But I didn’t want to go outside and learn how to do that. I wanted HIM to do that for me. “This is stupid Bob!” And he was all, “Don’t be silly. It’s easy enough.” And I was all, “I don’t need to know this!” And he was all, “Well what are you going to do next time your headlight goes out?” And tears sprang to my eyes because that scar across his face filled the unspoken words between us. He knew the cancer it left behind h ..read more

Writer’s Workshop: There’s One Left

1. Share about a time you responded to an ad in a paper. I didn’t necessarily respond to an ad in this scenario, but I did respond to people who responded to my family’s ad in the paper. It’s crazy to think the newspaper at one point was our one way of communicating information to the community. If you were hosting a garage sale or in our case, if your cat had kittens, you would put in an ad in the paper. When my cat had kittens and I was in cat HEAVEN. I loved cats and kittens and dogs and puppies and just all furry, lovable creatures. I thought I was a cat whisperer and prided myself on the ..read more

Writer’s Workshop: I Broke Curfew
Mama's Losin' It!
by Mama Kat
1M ago
2. Tell us about a time you broke curfew…what were you up to? When I was fifteen my curfew was midnight. If something awesome was happening past midnight, I would ask for permission to spend the night at a friend’s house who had a later curfew. The inevitable problem I was bound to run into is that my mom would tell me I could not spend the night at my friend’s house and I would have to go home while everyone else stayed out and had the time of their lives. About 90% of the time when my Mom said no to overnighters based on a hunch that I was up to no good, she was correct. I would complain an ..read more

Writer’s Workshop: I Quit Children’s World
Mama's Losin' It!
by Mama Kat
1M ago
1. Write a blog post about a time you quit something. I worked at a childcare center called Children’s World when I was in college and it was one of the worst centers I’ve ever been affiliated with. I was on the 6am – 3pm shift, but often stayed as late as they needed me because we were so low-staffed. We would literally have people show up for their first day on the job only to have them disappear on their lunch break. One teacher called it Children’s Hell because the kids behavior was so outrageous. I felt really pleased to have been a lead teacher in the school-age classroom within my firs ..read more
