Scorpio Season

This is a Holy time of year, when the veil between worlds is at its thinnest and most transparent. As the final flourish of Autumn fades, the bones of things are exposed: blades of piercing light penetrate dark dramatic skies, revealing the skeletal structures beneath the flesh. Here, at the midpoint of two very significant eclipses, we find ourselves in a world of shadows, haunted by memories of the past and ghosts of the future.  Scorpio season is a journey through the underworld. Deep in the annals of psyche and soul is where we encounter our darkness. It’s a process that scours the so ..read more

Full Moon Pisces

Like rain in the desert, or salve for sunburned skin, the Pisces Full Moon brings sweet relief to our overwrought minds and our parched souls. There has been a lot of dry mental energy lately - malefic mental energy - with both Saturn and Mars hanging out in air signs, with the Sun and Venus is hyper-analytical Virgo and Mercury screeching to a halt in indecisive Libra. We've been thinking, considering, stewing, ruminating, rehashing, churning, deliberating, weighing our options, mulling it over, brooding. But the head can never take us where the heart belongs; reason alone will never satisfy ..read more

Change is Messy

Wellness gurus and life coaches may talk about change as if it was all roses unfolding and butterflies hatching. But real change, big change, is messy. Sure, the end result may be beautiful and exhilarating, but the process itself is often awkward and uncomfortable, if not downright painful. Every new beginning is built upon an ending, every rebirth implies a death. Even the butterfly must undergo a process of total dissolution before it flies free from its cocoon.  We are living in turbulent times. The only certainty we have is change. As the social, economic and political landscape alt ..read more

When my kids were little, I sent them to Catholic school, not for religion, for French immersion. And although I had reservations about exposing them to Catholic dogma, I figured, with a Master’s Degree in Religious Studies, I could counter any detrimental teachings with my academic arsenal of history, facts and feminism. I was wrong.  At this particular school, it was customary for students to be confirmed as Catholics in fourth grade. This involved intensive preparation for Catholic students and intensive pressure for non-Catholics to convert to the faith. They spent months and months l ..read more

More and more, I think of the Moon as the key to everything. She represents mother, nurture and care. She speaks to our deepest feelings, our basic responses, our primal needs. In the most general sense, Moon signifies women, children and the eternal cycle of birth, growth, decay, death and rebirth.  Cancer is the Moon’s abode, the dark watery temple where she goes for comfort and belonging. It is a very protective sign, like the primordial womb where we plant our seeds and tenderly house them in a safe, dark container. However, if we become too addicted to safety and security, our seeds ..read more

A Heavenly Game of Hide and Seek

The Ancients, with no artificial light and no Netflix, binge-watched the stars. They mapped the heavens, observed the cycles and movements of the planets and noted their correspondence with earthly events. Over time, they came to understand this cosmic procession as a symbolic script with text and subtext, meaning and method.  Naturally, the two “lights,” Sun and Moon, are the principal actors in this celestial drama, with the planets, stars and constellations as supporting cast. The interplay between the luminaries provides the scaffolding for the grand stage we call Astrology. The Sun a ..read more

Riding the Jupiter-Neptune Wave

Transits come in waves: rising, cresting, falling in a continuous and endless procession. Sometimes the waves are small and fleeting, like a passing mood, sometimes they push us in a new direction, and sometimes they hit like a tsunami. When a faster moving planet forms an aspect to another planet or point, we may feel the effects for hours or days. But when the outer planets connect to our charts, the effects can be profound and long lasting. In April 2022, we will all experience a once-in-a-lifetime surge as Jupiter meets Neptune in the sign of the Fishes. There are fantastical watery worlds ..read more

I arose before dawn the other morning, hoping to catch a glimpse of Venus, Mars and Mercury rising on the eastern horizon. The setting Moon was full and glorious, lighting up the frozen landscape with a pure silver glow. It was a frosty -23° outside, but Shiva and I were undeterred. I’m not sure the tiny glint I saw was actually Mercury, and Mars appeared distant and dim. But Venus….. Venus was a marvel, so luminous and large that at first, I didn’t know what I was seeing. She looked like those pictures of the Star of Bethlehem: four-pointed, dazzling and unbelievably beautiful. Astrologically ..read more

The Uses and Abuses of Astrology

Life is a struggle sometimes. Like today. There’s a global pandemic raging, the polar ice caps are melting, we’re on the verge of a worldwide economic Depression and a winter storm “bomb” is headed my way.  Fortunately, I have an abiding passion that keeps me sane. No matter how bleak the human world appears, astrology assures me that there is beauty and order to the universe.   I’m not alone. Though confidence in organized religion continues to wane, interest in astrology is exploding, especially among millennials.  While pundits scratch their heads and the old guard berat ..read more

Why does everyone hate Scorpio?

Birth, death and regeneration. Intensity, power and depth. The eighth sign of the zodiac confronts us with some of the most potent, vital and frightening aspects of human existence. Scorpio is undoubtedly the most maligned and misunderstood sign of horoscopic astrology. Associated with obsession, paranoia, vindictiveness, jealousy, manipulation and ruthlessness, this feminine water sign has become a convenient scapegoat for all that is unsavoury in human experience. The ancients assigned rulership of Scorpio to Mars, and many of its negative significations are derived from a combination of Mar ..read more
